mycobag inquiry / cold shock?
    #4981781 -

16 days ago, a friend of mine inoculated two mycobags (each with 2.5 cc's of ps. cubensis strain: treasure coast) through the injection site in the sides and the center towards the edge of the bag/substrate (as opposed to deep within the substrate).

for the first seven days, the temperature (unintentionally) fluctuated from 74 to 85 degrees but now they're being kept in the lower 80's, constantly.

she still sees no signs of colonization but half the refrigerated syringe is left.

should she re-inoculate? if so, how much? another 2.5? deeper in the substrate?

or just wait?

i used the grain based mycobags for my first grow. they took about 1 month to colonize. slow mother fuckers they were.

would you recommend something other than grain as a mycobag substrate?

FINALLY, after re-innoculating the bags one of them fully colonized a little over two weeks ago. it went from 85 degrees down to about 75, with about 12 hours of light a day, but she still isn't seeing any pins. she's wondering if a 24-hour vacation to the refrigerator would help things move along. or just wait it out ?

Seems like someone mentioned recently that adding a couple of tablespoons of BRF would speed up colonization....

don't open the mycobags if you bought them from mycofactory and such...

Its sterile in there already.

no no.. colonization is 110% complete. how to initiate fruiting is the question. i know that in order to start the fruiting process, mycelium must stop consuming. but i don't think that's happening.

it seems that the temperature shift wasn't enough to actually trigger the change from colonization to fruiting, so that's why i proposed the idea of cold shocking the bag. i've never heard of anyone shocking grow bags but i don't see what harm it could do.. anyone?

just to sum this thing up, she lost both of the bags after cold-shocking them in her fridge for about 12 hours. so don't try this at home.

she got more though, ecuadors, and they were starting to pin when the bags were torn apart by a couple rats one night in her attic. a couple days later one of the rats was found in her back yard, dead. no joke. must have been quite a ride.
