Should I dunk and cold shock for the first flush?
    #3242393 - 10/11/04 11:54 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I have gotten the general idea about dunking and shocking, but should this be done on the first flush as well. Should I do this right after the jar is colinized or should it wait until the second flush?

Yes, dunking alone will double/tripple your yields.

Do it right after you birth it.

I was told to.. so, I did.

Jars have been in the fridge for almost 18 hours. Going to take them out and put them in the chamber soon.

If you are going to case, don't cold shock, just dunk.

If you are going to leave as cakes, just dunk them in their jars and cold shock them at the same time.

Yes, cold shock/dunk before first flush and it will increase yield like Citric said.

ymhrswrider, don't be surprised if discmand doesn't see anything before you need to birth your cakes. He's jars were done just yesterday, i think... It takes about a week to see pins on cakes.

Yeah. Only 3 jars were done. About 4 more have just a small splotch that isn't colonized on the bottom, so I figured I would wait a few more days for them. 4 more jars are a few days behind them(Mostly the Ecuador). I found 1 jar with a dull grey fuzz contam.

I bought a bottle of karo, need to get busy on that.. and procure some WBS, or maybe rye. Cakes take too long.

I figured, I mainly just wanted some encouragement. I am going to be trying my own newbie experiment with some Brazilians. This is the first time I have ever tried to grow anything so it should be fun. I am going to be using a modified PF Tek method. Hopefully I can get all 10 jars to take hold without any contams. Half the jars will use the normal BRF mixture while half with use rye flower instead of the BRF. One of each mixture will also use a weak coffee mixture rather than straight water. All cakes will be dunked/shocked while one of each mixture(not the ones already mixed with coffee) will be dunked in a weak coffee mixture. Finally, I might be trying a casing method. I don't have a digital just yet so I don't know how forthcoming pictures will be, but I will keep everybody updated. Hopefully this will give other newbies a few more options to get a higher yeild on their first try.

Will cold shocking hurt if I'm going to case? Or, is it just not recommended?

do you guys think the risk of contam. is the same before and after the first flush?, when it comes to taking the cake out of a mycobag and dunk/shock it, some people have stated that waiting till after the first flush is a good time. can it be done before the first flush?, it seems to help my cakes sooooo much, after the first flush.

The risk for contam is greater every hour your shrooms are alive. Generally if you get through the first flush you can get another one or two at least before it contams. Sometime they contam after the first flush..but sometimes they contam before too. It really just has to do with you and the sterile precautions you take. It most certainly can be taken out before the first flush and should improve your first flush yeilds as opposed to letting them go in the bag.
