Hardwood chips/dust sources?
    #489710 -

Ok -

I'm looking to try my hand at some woodloving species, and have been trying to source hardwood products.

I could buy chips/dust from FP at around $1.50/# but I'd love to find a cheaper source.

I'm wondering whether anyone here has any info on the best/cheapest source for hardwood products.

First of all, are there obvious local sources for hardwood chips/dust, preferably where one can know the quality/species of wood one is getting? (I'm in the NE, but presumably one would find similar sources anywhere, such as a sawmill or lumber company, etc.)

What about products meant for other purposes? Animal bedding? Wood chips for smokers? Wood pellet fuel? Any others?

I'm looking to set up some beds for the spring, and want to produce spawn this winter.

Any ideas would be most helpful.

Thanks,
AE

$1.50 sounds pretty damn cheap. Considering the time it takes just to package and ship this stuff, no wonder it's hard to find decent chips, it's a charity product.

I'm not looking for a handout, I'm looking to use local resources (recycle) and to save money. $1.50 a pound (plus shipping on a high weight item) is a lot if you want 20 ro 50 #.
