after many searches and calls, i finally found hardwood wood pellets for growing my mushies! well, they dont say hardwood but the guy at wally world said 'Premium' means hardwood in the wood pellet world... is this true? it was 3.70 usd for a 40 or 50 pound bag, so if they dont work its not a major loss. my camera is broken, so im looking for a pic now... it doesnt say anywhere on the bag that they are hardwood, but it also doesnt say they are softwood. also, i asked the guy 'are these hardwood or softwood?' and he said 'usually premium means hardwood, and the bag doesnt say softwood, so as far as i know, they're hardwood' i made sure not to ask 'are these hardwood?' cause he might lie about that... has anybody else used pellets from walmart for various fungi like shiitakes?
thanks! (ill post a pic if i cand find one on the net)

If they are wood stove pellets they should be hardwood.

That doesn't make sence. All that know anything about wood burning stoves know not to use soft woods. Its dangerus. The resins can cover the flue and burn the place down. Why would a store carey such a thing as soft wood pellets!!!

I believe pellet stoves burn considerably hotter and cleaner than wood stoves, so resins do not cause the same problems. Sawdust, which is what pellets essentially are made from, burn more completely, because of its fine particle size.
I have seen plenty of pellets made from softwoods, and I doubt they could sell them for very long if houses were burning down right and left.

i've never seen barbecue fuel pellets on sale in the UK, but would love to know if anyone has been successful in finding a reasonable source.

Its not for cooking its for heating. 50 pounds of pellets only costs 3 bucks during the off season. Even if its all soft wood i know it works just fine for edibles.......

Pellets for barbecuing do exist (at least in the US). They are considerably more expensive, but you can buy them made from specific tree species, rather than simply "hardwood" or "softwood".
The US brand is Traeger.

Go to www.cubexpellets.com. They produce hardwood floors. It's the sawdust I use (3.79$ can./ 40 pds.). Good luck.
