you can-
the secret is strain isolation/cloning
a good isolate makes all the difference in the world

in the case shown-
TC from multispore on agar was used to isolate a few 'sub-strains' for comparison testing, each 1/2 of the pie plate was filled with a different isolate,then grown out until it's easily seen that one is quite obviously superior to the other-
clone then from the 'good' side
