Do you believe in hypnotism?

I've never been hypnotized myself so I really can't say for sure. But I really don't believe that stuff you see on TV is real. I suppose I do believe that hypnotism at a therapy level might actually work, but not the pretentious stuff that you watch on Maury or some other crappy talk show.

Now the reason I bring this up is because maybe some of you folks have actually BEEN hypnotized and could totally prove me wrong. So I was just wondering if any of you could attest to the fact that hypnotism is real or the converse.

(this is my 1000th post btw, yay for me! :grin:)

i was hypnotised by my grandfather when i was about 7, so yes. i belive in hypnotism.

i went to a stage hypnotism thing once.... it seemed real to me.....

i mean... you can certainly do some weird ass stuff in your dreams, so imagine your reality is being generated entirely by the suggestions of another person....

it's more than possible.

also I mean.... monks in meditation can not feel any pain at all.... and do some neat things, so it stands to reason hypnotism can do some far out stuff too.

All hypnotism is self-hypnotism.

Hypnotists merely guide you to access your own subconscious.

None of that TV bullshit though about being hypnotized and doing things you wouldn't normally do, and snapping out of it from a magic word or something and not remembering anything. You are fully conscious, and in control. Just in a deep state of concentration.

yes it's real.

no you can't make people do things they wouldn't normally do or don't want to do.

I always figured that if someone tried to hypnotize me that it wouldn't work because I wouldn't submit. I don't know if I would be able to or not. I don't understand just how someone talking can put you into another state like that. It just doesn't seem logical to me.

You are correct. If you wouldn't submit it would not work.
They just talk you through it. You do the concentrating. You put yourself in that state.
It's just a state of deep concentration, sort of like meditation.

hmmm, that sounds very interesting. I can truthfully say i've never even meditated. What exactly is that like? How do you get yourself in that state of mind? I don't know how to describe how I think but I'm not sure if I would be able to do anything like that. If i were to try to get myself in that state of mind I'd probably end up screwing it up because I'd start to analyze what i'm doing. I constantly have thoughts in my mind and I can't just clear my thoughts...I doubt that makes sense but I dont know how to word it.

it works, but you have to let it happen, it is very real...I have never been hypnotized but it works when you want it to.

I saw this fuckin cool vid on college humor of these hypnotists in newyork who hypnotized bout 6 people, then ran like hell outa there when they were still acting crazy. The one guy was told to act like he was in a desert searching for water, he kept asking everyone for water. Another was told to fall in love with anothers boy friend, and vis versa. It was wierd as hell.

cops came too, but the hypnotists got away

Meditation is concentration. Focusing your mind. Inwards.
Everyone can do it/does it. There are many ways of meditation. Everyone's brain works differently, but we are all essentially the same.

Meditation is simply focusing your mind. That's it. There's no start or finish.
Some say to clear your mind of all thoughts. This is incorrect, because it is impossible.
The idea is to focus on say, one thing. Like your breathing. Or a candle flame.
Instead of actively engaging your thoughts (which come naturally and tend to go in cycles)
You simple observe them, like they are passing clouds in the sky.. with no attachments.
It is a simple act of calming the mind, focusing the mind. You can go as deep or as light as you like. You can do it for 1 second or 10 years. You can meditate in almost any situation. Basically, it helps you to be more focused.

Stage hypnotism is fake. It's an act. The people who are "hypnotized" know exactly what is going on. This kind of disinformation pisses me off, because it gives people the wrong impression.

Hmmmmm that seems really difficult. Although I've nevr tried that I can't say it wouldn't work for me. Maybe if I were in a dark room by myself I might be able to pull something like that off. It's just that I think i'd end up thinking of something else. Whether it be "why the hell am I doing this" or "my ass itches" it seems rather difficult for me. Maybe I'll give it a shot one of these days...

It's not difficult at all. It's one of the easiest and natural things for humans to do.

Close your eyes and concentrate on your breathing for 5 seconds.

There.. you meditated.

See, even then I just tried to do it but I always have some thoughts in the back of my mind...maybe I'm ADD or something I dont know.

Plus if I meditated, I'd want it to do something beneficial. But I suppose I have to start somewhere.

Meditation helps with ADD.

Thoughts in the back of your mind are OK.... we are human... we think.. that's what we do.

Meditation teaches you to control your thoughts.

The more you do it, the easier it gets. The more natural it becomes.

What could be more beneficial?

Thought creates your reality.

All actions begin with a thought.

If you control your thoughts, you control your reality.

I think I hypnotise myself when I'm tripping - I always focus on my breathing and talk myself into thinking shit - They way you just explained it shroomism, made me think of that.

Maybe I'm just totally confused though ? hehe
