I Installed slackware 10.1 on this IBM Thinkpad T21 (PIII Coppermine @ 796 MHz) and then immediately installed droplinegnome. Later I upgraded to slackware 10.2 using slackpkg.

As you can probably guess, my gnome clock applet seems to have disappeared .... I sort of miss it.

why do you prefer debian over, say, a debian-based system like ubuntu? seems like debian is more for servers, while ubuntu more cut out for a friendly desktop (while still staying somewhat true to debian).

I think I'd always use a debian system. I love the stability, the philosophy, and...well, apt

you know, there is no real reason why i prefer debian to ubuntu - it is just what i've currently been running (before this, i ran red-hat some years ago, and mandrake more recently). i'm actually planning on re-partitioning my windows partition and putting ubuntu on half of it, since i've heard it so highly recommended by these forums.

and, yes... apt rocks the house. i guess fedora core has tried to copy it via yum, so the concept isn't unique to debian/ubuntu anymore, but it isn't quite the same. haha but be careful about mixing unstable/testing stuff with your stable distribution - now almost everytime i try to apt-get install something, i have to fool around with a million and one dependencies. whoops!

I just fooled around with Ubuntu's live cd..I liked it, except I couldn't access the internet.  Maybe that's not a feature on the live CD, i dunno...but I do love Ubuntu
