Laptops Vs. Desktops

In your opinion, which do you prefer and why?
My motherboard fried a couple weeks ago on my desktop and I have the option to get either a used laptop or desktop for the same price with similar specs(the desktop is a little bit better.)
I'm leaning towards just getting a laptop because I can replace my motherboard when I have some more money and then I'll have a working laptop and desktop for under $250.

I personally have both. Two 24" monitors at home with a monster desktop. I also have a 13" Macbook Air for when I'm travelling. If I had to pick one it would definitely be a desktop.

Can't understand why you wouldn't own both, if you leave your house somewhat regularly. That said, if you absolutely had to only have one or the other for some reason, laptop. Portability is handy.

There is no VS discussion really...
Desktops for people who want to pay a reasonable amount for a great computer and be able to play most games and watch videos in 1080p on a decent resolution monitor.
Laptops for people who want to do the same stuff as above but on the go for about $300 more than you'd of paid for a same specs laptop (depending on brand ofc).

I almost built another desktop, but I got another laptop instead. Just because I found a bad ass laptop for a damn good price.
I highly recommend laptops because of the mobility. I almost went with building a small form factor, but the laptop is much more portable.

I prefer a desktop. Now, if you get a laptop, don't fall for the sucker price for a big ram. They will charge you an extra $300 for 8gb of ram. Just get the laptop with 2gb and update to 8gb for $60.

I prefer desktops. Bigger and better monitors, and more options for customization. Also they're less likely to break since you wont really be lugging them around.

The bigger and better monitors statement makes no sense considering you can hook your laptop up to your monitor just as easily as your desktop.
I agree with everything else you said, but one shouldn't feel obligated to have a desktop PC just because they have an awesome 27" HD monitor.

While that's true most people aren't running multiple monitors off of a laptop something that comes with ease to desktop users. It seems funny to drop money into a laptop though just to use a monitor, all though every friend I know who has a laptop does this.
Which brings up another reason I hate laptops. Even good alienwares aren't going to have 24" screens and not for cheap especially. I got my 24" for $150 and it's a very nice BenQ monitor.

I just replaced my old laptop with a used 2009 macbook in decent condition for 350.00. It runs well, I just may purchase some more memory for it in the near future. When I have a little more money saved up, I'm going to get myself an awesome home PC setup that will be much better for designing stuff on. Right now I mainly use my computer for schoolwork and personal use and I much prefer a user-friendly macbook that's much lighter and sleeker than my old pc. It just doesn't make sense to go all out right now when I don't really require it for professional use and when I'd be struggling to scrape together the money for a 4,000 setup, yaknow?

I run multiple monitors off a laptop. I have two 24" monitors connected to a docking station. I think it makes sense, in that I have a docking station hooked to monitors at home, AND at work. I can work on the laptop, and If I need to, just pop it right out of the dock, then hook it back in on my home docking station (or elsewhere).
If I need to travel or be mobile with the laptop, its a similar scenario: Just pop it out. If you're moving the laptop a lot, a docking station is worth its weight in gold since you don't have to constantly reconnect power, monitors, keyboard, mouse etc.

If I had to have one, it would be a desktop. With my desktop which has 6 cores, 32 gigs of ram three SSD in raid 0 and dual GTX 570 in sli, driving 4 27" monitors using a laptop just feels crippled. I do heavy Virtual machines and audio video transcoding, which would choke a lot of laptops. laptops are useful, but if it could only be one, I use my desktop for far more stuff.

I have both. I just built a new desktop that is the most powerful computer I've ever used.
As far as the OPs question, it's apples and oranges. As far as bang for your buck desktop is the way to go. You'll get way more power for less money, and if something breaks it's easy to get a replacement part and swap it out. Then again, I can't watch TV while I'm pooping from my desktop
