Getting my shit together (part 1)
    #4772119 -

I'll start this off by saying i've always been a lazy bastard. I grew up in front of a TV and/or video game system, graduated to computers, then found drugs.

I went through a period of about 6 years of fairly heavy drug use (which is alot i suppose as i'm only 22 years old). The worst of this was about 3 years i spent as a heavy meth user. I finally got clean and have all but stopped doing drugs (i smoke weed mabey once a week if i feel up to it, and dabble in psych's about once a month).

Since ridding myself of my meth habit (i say that because i'm an addict, and realize i will always be an addict), I have gotten and held a steady job, and pretty much upgraded my entire life except for the health part.

I find it immeasurably difficult to work up the motivation to eat right or exercise. I've gotten a gym membership but i hardly ever go. I'm up about 100lbs since i quit smoking meth and its really getting to me. I'm miserable, i cant walk more than 100 yards without getting winded (i'm also a cigarette smoker).

I'm rambling a bit, but I thoght a little background might give some insight to my situation. What the post boils down to, is i'm looking for some hints and tips on motivating myself to be more healthy.

First thing's first, quit smoking those nasty fucking cancer sticks! They aren't doing you any good. Just another crutch/habit you don't really need. If you keep smoking these, it will be infinitely harder to reach your goals.

As for the motivation, it can be quite hard to start. It's like Nike...Just Do It. Being healthy is sort of like an addiction. Once you work out for a week or two, you will feel WAY better and want to do it more and more. Especially when you start to see gains in performance and positive change in physique.
Find something you enjoy doing. Sports are great. Basketball, football, swimming(therapeutic as well), hiking, hunting, bowling, etc. It's harder to go "work out" than it is to go partake in a loved activity.
This will also introduce you to new/more people that are doing the same thing as you. More friends makes for a more enjoyable/confident life. They will also help keep you motivated.

Eating right is a great way to get motivation. More fruits and vegetables and less salty/sugary foods. Drink water instead of soda and beer. Try to cut soda out completely.
Once you get going with that you will notice that things like potato chips have entirely too much salt and won't want them as much. Try eating more fish and chicken(there's a million ways to enjoy chicken).

Most of all, you have to really want to change. Being healthy will be a new lifestyle. Lots of old habits to drop/change. But if you got over a meth addiction, you can do this.
First step is admitting the problem...admit that you are a fatter and lazier than you want to be and it makes you feel bad. Then it will be that much easier to overcome. There is nothing holding you back but yourself.

Good luck!

Good show, buddy. I don't have any practical advice, but I'm
impressed with what you've done with yourself in what sounds
like a short time.

You need to take it one small step at the time or you will feel overwhelmed and accomplish nothing. Maybe you can ? as daimyo suggested ? start by quitting the cigs and once you accomplish that move on to let?s say loosing weight or something else. One step at the time.

Be kind to yourself.

Find a friend that will keep you on track...and praise/bitch when needed (also you can reward and punish yourself).

Also...I sorta think the motivation won't come untill you've had enough....so maybe you haven't hit bottom yet.

Thanks for all the advice and support. I kinda forgot about this thread and just stumble back in. I agree that getting rid of the death sticks is probably the best starting point.

I've had some serious respiratory problems in the past which i'm sure are at least mostly caused by the cigs. and the meth smoking (been clean just over a year now). In the past 12 months i've had pneumonia, and pretty bad bronchitis twice. I quit smoking during the illnesses for obvious reasons but always ended up starting again.

I think i'll pick up either some gum or patches on payday so i can put off the physical withdrawl a while untill i've delt with the psychologial part of it for a while.
