Prescription: Law of the land

The connection between anti-depression prescriptions and illicit drug laws

I stumbled upon a article relating to prescription drug use. A national study from 2002 shows that Utah has the highest amount of anti-depression prescriptions written out of all 50 states. As I continued, I noticed it stated that it was twice the rate of California, and three times the amount written in new york and New Jersey. Utah happens to be the first state to have implemented criminal penalties to the use and possession of marijuana. It also turns out that Utah has extremely strict drug laws (including random high school drug testing), if I am wrong correct me, as then my theory is proven false.

Perhaps these strict drug laws have some influence on the amount of citizens seeking legal anti-depressants as opposed to, for example, reaching for some marijuana? It seems logical to me, though I'm surprised I can not find any studies done on a possible connection. It, of course, can be due to many other reasons. This is a theory (which could have been researched much more throughly, and perhaps will be in the future) and hope for possible discussion.

Do you think theres a connection?

If so, do you think this connection helps or hinders the "War on Drugs"?

That actually sounds like a great idea for a project I can do for my sociology class. Thanks for the idea.

No, I think people in Utah are depressed because either they are Mormons, and therefore are held to all kinds of stressful restrictions on their lives, or else because they are NOT Mormons, but are pressured to live under many of the same Mormon conditions by way of social pressures, and crazy laws.
