Three men have appeared in court in Melbourne charged over the importation of 24 kilograms of ecstasy.

Australian Federal Police (AFP) say 115,000 tablets were hidden in beds imported from Belgium.

Nunawading man Thomas Francis Gaut, 64, Meir Yair Rakach, 35, of Carnegie, and East St Kilda man Ollie Azriel, 33, appeared in court this afternoon.

The men have been charged over the importation of ecstasy with a street value of more than $4.5 million.

AFP agent Neil Burnage says Belgian authorities informed Australian Customs of the suspicious cargo.

"The concealment was a brazen attempt to import drugs into Australia. The maximum penalty for these offences is up to life imprisonment," he said.

The men did not apply for bail and were remanded to appear in court again on December 12.
