My First Marijuana Grow.

I made up my mind to grow a few plants. I have quality seeds from Hemcy, 12 California Orange and 12 Big Bud, what one should I grow?. I'm not sure what I should do first. I will be growing with Fluroscents so what should I look for when buying them?

Do 1 of each.
start out maybe 5 seeds of each and end up with the top of each.

Get a 4 ft cool white and warm white bulb.
that will be enough for veg but ur need something bigger once u want to fruit.

If you have a little money to spend you can get 105-200 watt fluoro lights online. I've found that they work work wonders. For 125 dollars you can get a 150 watt bulb with reflector at certain places online.

Yeah, go with the HPS if you have room and can cool it down. I used fluoros in the past because for a small grow they are perfect. You can have the plants sucking up much more of the light since they can be a centimeter to an inch away from the light. In a closet or small area heat can become a problem.

I have actualy read alot about Big Bud being great indoors http://cannabisguide.com/closet_culture/Chapter_6.htm

I got the demensions of the closet I wish to grow in:

2ft 5in deep x 3ft 10in wide x 7ft tall

I would suggest throwing a HPS into the mix once budding hits, otherwise they gonna be whispy as fuck. the warmer californian strains are used to our intense sunny days, and flouros are cooler and would most likely be very whispy. California orange is a very good strain, a little on the bitter side, but very high in quality. although the potency is nothing to brag about compared to white rhino or c13. Big bud strain is better off left one big nugg while growing, I know people who grew it and they said topping it gets less of a yield, while as leaving it one big nugg has produced 3-4 ounces off a normal yielding sized plant (and those buds get 2 liter sized).

Ok I decided to use a bigger closet. the one im going to be using is alot bigger. its 2ft deep x 8ft tall x 5ft accross. How many plants will fit nicely in this space?

general rule of thumb is 1 plant per square foot

Get a HPS and a few good fans. Fluros are OK for veg...

Only HPS will produce bud worth the risk of growing it....

That's five girls under two 400w hps. Should yeild nearly 2Lb.

I'm not willing to use anything but Fluorescents for my first grow. I have seen a fair amount of grows over at overgrow that show some nice results just using Fluorescents and from what I have read as long as I do the math and get the correct amount of w's/sqft I will have fair results, and fair results are acceptable at this point.

Now about that math... :grin:

I can't figure out the sqft of my closet. I would rather someone give me the equation so I can figure it out myself but if you must give the answer please tell me how you figured it out. My grow space is, 2ft Deep x 8ft High x 5ft Across.

I also have no idea how to figure out how much lighting I need to buy so the ability to figure out how much light is hitting each sqft is a must. Any help with that would be awesome.

Easy, with square footage you are just looking for the floor size- 5 feet by 2 feet equals 10 square feet. Now most folks usually recommend 50 watts per sf, so 50 X 10 = 500. You'll need lots of long flouros for 500 watts of light. I suggest a HPS system. Those successful flouro grows are usually in the small closets like the first one you mentioned. Just get a 600 watt HPS and a real good squirrel cage fan for ventilation.
Also you could divide your room into a flowering and a mother room, for quicker turnarounds, and you would need less light for the mother room. Flouros would work great there. Then get a 250 or 400 HPS for the flowering. Anyway, good luck!
