Campaign finance reform
    #4666269 -

I'd say this is one of the most widely misunderstood issues among voters. Seems like every time I see some group trying to get people to sign a petition, it's always something about trying to limit campaign contributions, make them more visible, or some other legislation trying to limit the way candidates can get money for campaigning. None of these people seem to understand the damage this does to minor parties, thus furthering the political stronghold of the Democrats and Republicans. Businesses are going to donate to the Democrats and Republicans anyway, but forcing them to reveal their donations creates a disincentive for them to donate to smaller parties, as they don't want to upset the duopoly. Then limiting the amount that they can donate further hurts minor parties, because they have far fewer donors in the first place. Unless there were a way to get money and favors out of politics entirely, the best way to create a fair system is through free competition.

You know in the 50's it was easy to ruin someone's life by accusing them of being a pinko

It isn't. He is incapable of relevance.

Paradigm: So are you arguing against tranparency in the finance system? I understand your argument, but I don't think we need more shadiness in our system.

I am saying that this shadiness is unavoidable, and that our attempts to correct the problem have simply made things worse.

How would you suggest we fix it, then?

As I've described. Repeal laws which inhibit the ability of political parties to raise funds for their candidates.

You damn well know that won't fix anything. To get rid of the "restrictions" we have today won't help. It'll just be a money-flinging for all, and you know who will get the money.

And that's different from what we have today...how? The only difference I see is that more of that money-flinging could go towards helping out smaller parties. I suppose we could go the opposite route and ban campaign contributions altogether while using tax dollars to pay for their campaigns, but even then, there are ways that "independent" lobbying groups like moveon.org or Swiftboat Veterans for Truth could get around that. You can't hold back the big guys without holding back the little guys even more.

Only living, breathing U.S. citizens should be allowed to donate to political candidates, parties, initiatives, PACs or lobbying efforts of any kind. No corporations, no foreign entities, no unions, but no limits on personal donations from individual citizens. Government should be of, by, and for the people, not institutions or foreigners.

  Good point.  If someone petitioned to have that kind of campaign finance reform, I'd sign it in a heartbeat.
