Anyone else find that most tracking numbers are useless?

I've ordered a fair amount over the internet, and have found that most tracking numbers are useless. I usually get messages like:
"The U.S. Postal Service was electronically notified by the shipper or shipping partner on *insert date here* to expect your package for mailing. This does not indicate receipt by the USPS or the actual mailing date. Delivery status information will be provided if / when available. Information, if available, is updated every evening. Please check again later."
Yet there is no real indication of where the package is, or when it will be delivered! What the hell!

UPS and FedEx and DHL tracking numbers are all really helpful, usually the location of the package is updated multiple times in a day. I shipped something to California and watched it move across the country state by state.

Perhaps it's a USPS thing, which is what I get the majority of my packages shipped by.

I don't like shipping things by USPS, them being part of the government and all. I prefer independent operators.

This does not indicate receipt by the USPS or the actual mailing date. Delivery status information will be provided if / when available. Information, if available, is updated every evening. even after its been delieverd.

There are two kinds of people, people that hate that movie, and people that think it's hilarious. It has this weird funniness to it..

The USPS tracking system just sucks. Fedex and UPS are good at updating their system quickly. I can usually get a package at mydoo from the UPS man and by the time I walk to my computer and look at the tracking, it is already updated as arrived. So, that's pretty damned quick.
Anyway, if you want a better tracking system, start requesting that the sender use UPS or FedEx.

Yeah so my FedEx package says that it's been "On FedEx vehicle for delivery" since around 4 this morning, and it's now past 10 at night and still no sign of the package. I think FedEx stops delivering after 8 or 9 anyways.
Bah I find UPS to have the better of the tracking systems I think...

USPS numbers are NOT tracking numbers, they are Delivery Confirmation numbers. Delivery Confirmation is used to verify that a package has been delivered to the recipient, not to track the packages shipping status; this is primarily for the benefit of the shipping party.

Well, when you go to www.usps.com there is a link to click on that says "Track and Confirm." That's where you enter your number. That makes it sound like a tracking number to me.
