Bag left in restroom leads to drug arrest August 28, 2005 - tdn.com
Leaving a satchel with roughly 63 grams of methamphetamine, a drug price list and more than $2,300 of cash in a convenience store restroom turned out to be a ticket to jail for Terry Scott Hartzog.
The 40-year-old, whose town of residence was unavailable, left his bag Friday in the bathroom of Kelso's Freeway Shell convenience store, according to police reports. Another customer turned the bag into a store employee, who promptly called police after discovering the satchel's contents, which included bank statements and a checkbook with Hartzog's name.
Kelso police tracked down Hartzog's Camaro in the parking lot of Kelso Motel 6, where officers and Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Task Force officers arrested him on suspicion of felony drug manufacturing and delivering.
In his room, they found a .22 caliber derringer, packaging material, scales, marijuana, an electronic cattle prod and bags with powder residue, according to police report.
Hartzog admitted to officers that the items belonged to him, police reports said. He told officers he suffers from severe back pain and cancer, so he self-medicates with alcohol, marijuana and meth, according to police reports.
Later, in interviews with police, he told officers he started using meth two years ago and had been dealing in relatively small amounts until he received a sizeable L&I settlement recently, police said. After that, he began purchasing and selling larger amounts, he told police.
