Not smart man, I hope you are atleast running peer guardian.

The only way to avoid the RIAA/ MPAA is keep your downloading in moderation. Once you are pushing over 200GB in downloads per month, ppl start to notice, in most cases your ISP and they will report you just because they don't like you using up all their bandwidth.

Actually I was just joking about the RIAA. All the music I downloaded was house and trance stuff that's not sold on CD let alone a record label that the RIAA cares about.

That is one supremely impressive number and if you are a canuck you have little to worry about.

I just finished downloading Kind of Blue and A Love Supreme, this shit is epitome of cool

kronny, that's being a little presumptuous.

Your ISP will not report you to the RIAA or to any badcorp based solely on download rates. I have yet to see any evidence proving otherwise.

Do you really think they're going to go reporting everyone with a high download/upload rate, lose customers, and gain a bad reputation? They will cap your upload/download speed before that happens.

I do agree though. What the fuck do you need 4.5 gigs of mp3s for in 2 days time? How can you even begin to DIGEST all of that? Pace yourself, it'll pay off for you. Watch what you download, too. Just because it's house/psytrance or whatever does not mean that it's safe. Even our beloved Shpongle's record company (Kinetic Records, here in the states) is a member of the RIAA.

Where are you getting your music from? I want to get a very large collection of house and trance mp3s. I mainly just have DJ sets and stuff

RIAA doesn't give a shit unless you're downloading 50 cent or ashanti or something mainstream bs like that

The RIAA gives a shit as long as the music belongs to one of their members.

You can check to see if the music you want to download is or is not involved with the RIAA here - http://www.magnetbox.com/riaa/ . The list of members is ever fluxuating, so this link can be inaccurate, but I've found it to be a handy tool in the past.

Edit: Heh, just realized bi0 posted almost the exact same link.

yeah
on soulseek
I'm on user list only
so only those on my list
can get my music
and whenever I download
from someone they automatically
get added.
I think this is pretty damn safe.

If you don't upload, you defeat the whole purpose of p2p. This is exactly what the RIAA wants in doing what they're doing.

Soulseek is relatively safe in itself, and you probably don't have to worry that much about using that service. My guess is that it's not much of their concern considering that Soulseek was DEVELOPED for underground electronica and that is still the purpose it mainly serves.

I have heard of cases in the past where downloaders have been targeted. It reduces your chances to just download and not upload, but does not eliminate them completely. The RIAA and MPAA have many companies working for them to set up fake file servers and turn in those illegally sharing their copyrighted material.

I do upload - every single day that I am on soulseek. I probably upload just as much as a non-user list person, if not more. I just upload to the few dozen people on my userlist that I know are not RIAA or leeches. There is nothing bad about approaching soulseek like hubs or private servers. If so, then explain why dc++ and emule are quite popular.
