Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

I just saw Wonka for the first time as an "adult." Fuck, man, that's a "drug movie" if I've ever seen one! Does anyone else notice some psychedelic undertones (or overtones) in the film... or is it just the skewed perception of my drug-addled mind??

i hope the new one lives up to the trippyness of the old. Everyone assumes because johnny Depp is in it it will have psychedelic connotations. i doubt it.

I saw an extended preview of the new one, trippy and then some. Makes the first one look rediculousley tame. As far as the psychedelic factor goes, I don't think anyone will be disapointed with this. It is directed by Tim Burton after all.

yeah i deff want to see the new one. i hope its trippier and everything, but i hope it has a lot of new shit in it too so its not just a boring remake. with johnny depp in it it should damn well be good though. and the previews look pretty cool, but you cant really tell from them except for the trippy colors

i saw the new one on shrooms. Tim Burton was great in making the backrounds unique, and twisted as always. depp was funny with his werid remarks to the kids. a must see on shrooms i laughed till i cried and then i laughed some more

I didn't really like the new one? Too much CGI. Depp was great, but I didn't care too much for it really.

I was highly disappointed with the new one. The classic still rules. Some parts were ok, but overall it was a sad effort at remaking a great classic film. One tidbit of trivia I did find interesting though is that the oompa loompa (Deep Roy) was not just pasted over and over in the scenes. He actually performed one action several hundred times and they used each cut when putting them together. So it wasn't just him rowing the boat once and then a copy+paste type of thing. He really did the action of rowing a boat 20+ times (however many oompa loompas they had on the boat). That certainly doesn't make up for the suckyness of the film though. 2 thumbs down.

Everyone keeps comparing it to the original.  It does not compare.  It was not intended to be a remake of the original film; it was intended to be Tim Burton's imaginative representation of the original story.  I thought it was fantastic.  The storyline had a bit more substance than the original film, and the characters had been expertly modernized without sacrificing the cozy feeling found in the pages of the book.

Now, the original was a classic and cannot be outdone.  It has value for it's own reasons, and those aren't shoes either Burton or Depp can fill.  There is no reason to suppose that Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are interested in some kind of film making competition with Mel Stuart and Gene Wilder.

As far as their genius goes in recreating the story with their own imaginative talent, I think they did an amazing job.  Two enthusiastic thumbs up!

Agreed. This is a new film almost. The old one and the remake do not compare simply because the plots are different.

Definitely worth seeing. The oompa lumpas are the trippiest part! The songs are great too. Go see it, don't compare it to the old one. :sun:
