I heart sushi! I remember when I lived in japan I used to stop by 7-11 and buy it all the time for lunch while out skating. Ahh, good times being a poor high school student .

I try making home made sushi all the time, it's an easy snack... but it's nothing like from a restaurant... getting the rice right is harder than you'd think.

but I've bought nice tuna steaks and used them as sashimi... that's delicious.

yeah, getting rice as good as in a good restaurant is difficult. also, forming those rice ball things for sushi takes skill... rolling it is easier.

theres this awesome place i go to occasionally in nyc - hands down the best ive ever had - but i can easily drop 40+ usd there... the toro is like $7 or $9 or something

best sushi i ever had, morimoto's in philly PA. Getting the rice right isn't that hard, you just need the right equipment and ingredients. (a wooden bowl and fan are a must)

mikey, i love toro too!  it's always the best (and priciest  ) piece of sushi ...

anybody have a good link to sushi recipes that work well?  i eat an all organic diet and was looking to make my own organic sushi, maybe even usin brown rice if it is in any way possible..

I'm also fond of toro. I was out at a sushi/hibachi place somewhere in PA (I forget the name/place, was visiting a friend and we drove 40 minutes just to get there,) and we wanted to have some toro. Unfortunately they were out, but the waitress suggested the white tuna as a substitute. OMG. It was so smooth it was like eating butter.

as long as the rice isnt all treated, sushi is pretty organic, id say... but as fish are cuaght in the wild, who knows what sort of shit they eat... tuna has high levels of mercury

white tuna is good as well, and much cheaper than toro... and yes, its buttery!

Just go to your local asian food market, they usually have everything you need including a rolling mat, short grain rice, sushi vinegar, and ginger rinds.

I've made my own a few times, but it's such an arsepain I really rather just go buy it. Damn it, now I want some!

Yeah i've heard of that school, seen it on the Food Network.

As for my favorite sushis:

Unagi
Ama Ebi
Salmon Egg Roll
Salmon Skin Cone
California Roll with Roasted scallops
Rainbow Roll
Spider Roll
White Roll

As for favorite sushi joint, I think it can be sorta tricky to actually rank different sushi places because in all honesty, many sushi bars aren't that stratefied in terms of quality. But if I had to pick a place it would be probably when I went to Seoul.

If you're talking stricly the states, there was this bomb ass place that my Japanese Uncle took me in Manhattan. Damn I can't even remember the name all I remember is that the sashimi was very flavorfull and the rice was nice and fluffy.

Recently I had some sushi that was an inside out roll with mango and avocado--it was surprisingly delicious.

The same place also had a tempura onion roll.
