Listening to my first Phish show
    #4392265 - 07/11/05 12:06 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

10-01-99 in Ames, Iowa. I thought I had packed this show with all my other discs but found it in my car. The only thing I can really remember about this show was a Bathtub Gin that never ended... I think it was a 20 minute version or something. Wild :-) I love listening to it.

No way man, Phish rocks! They can really rock out and make a huge crowd happily dance to their music. Quite the magical experience, and some of the best times in my life

I think that they're great!

haha well said indeed!

i'll admit that i never really dug phish that much until i saw them live. (ok i know the following is a comparison that really shouldn't be made but screw it, i'm doing it anyhow... so be pre-warned.)

whereas with (the majority) of the Dead's really out-there jams, you can still kind of feel the rock-n-roll groove (except perhaps in the case of space), so that even the most sober, least imaginative cats out there can still keep on tapping their toes til the chorus comes back, Phish really goes waaaaaaaaaaaay out there sometimes.  before i saw them a bunch and really became a big fan, those jams (esp when page goes amok) really confused me and stressed me out. Now,though, hearing such a jam brings me back to a mental-state, to a point in time, and makes me want to groove. :stoned:

Agreed Phish are the kings improve jamming they are more diverse and explore more than the dead. But its weird how the dead can sometimes sound waay more out there than phish even though musically they are not its just them working their magic.

The Dead and Phish are two of my fav bands to listen to live, and they both do amazing things with their improv. I love it when Phish starts playing a song and then somewhere in the middle, lost in a jam, they start another song, so you think the first song was over, but then they go back and finish the first song after the second song, making the second song inside of the first one.

If that made sense.

The Dead do the same thing sometimes, sorta, and I think that is one of my favorite parts about watching them live

My favorite hippie took me to see Phish live for their new year's run last year, four nights in Miami Florida, and each night we thought that they couldn't top the night before, but they did. Simply amazing. I remember hearing songs inside of songs and sometimes not even recognizing tunes until they were well in to it, and I just kept thinking "No way are they doing that! No way!"

And then they would keep jamming

Another great part was the audience, and how they would cheer before they band ever came on stage, and louder once they were on stage, and progressively louder throughout the show, and then even louder, immensely louder after the show in hopes of an encoure...

until they turned the lights on, and then we all knew it was over. And thousands of people said "Awww" like a bunch of disappointed toddlers.

I just loved it! Some of the best times in my live

Dude... that LA Woman was nuts. I was soooo fucked up and started hearing that shit and was like 'what the fuck is going on??... i've never heard this before..." Treys voice was sounding very weird and his guitar was doing some wavering shit into and around the LA Woman changes. Even when I listen to the show again, it still sounds just as fucked up to me as when I was at the show.

And the George Clinton showed up.... and the place got even smokier!!! What a fucking night!!!

I wish I saw Phish in '98. My first show was 7/8/00 Alpine Valley. It was a really good show. Even ended up as a Live Phish release. I think I saw 11 more shows over the course of the next four years. Man I miss those guys.

Darien Lake was the best cause they rocked it hard the first set... Albany was good, but the first night I arrived late cause our bus broke down outside of Syracuse on the way there. Had to hitch hike to Albany... Only missed Mellow Mood the first night.

Pepsi arena sucks for phish shows... something always fucked up happens to me there... but only at phish shows.

Hrm... wonder who those crazy Iowans were?!? Glass sucks!  I really miss blowing glass, and I can't wait to get back in to a studio! Even if it will be 120 degrees in the summer.

That third night, the 30th of December last year (Phish new year run in Miami), when George Clinton came on stage, is possibly the most magical concert I've ever been too. George Clinton was the first live music that I ever saw (outside of highschool jazz band competitions...) and I was totally a square. I remember going up to an officer and actually asking him why he wasn't arresting people, because hippies kept handing me joints! That concert was in a smokey little gym in Iowa, and seeing him again, once I knew what was going on, in his full glory in the middle of a screaming Phish show was almost more than I could bear in my current state of mind.

Oh, and his whole set, was inside of one Phish song  I just love it! After the whole Clinton family left the stage and Phish finished the song that they had started, I just couldn't believe it. I was like, No Way!

Ah... I thank my favorite hippie for all of the good memories that he has allowed me to create
