    #4386851 - 07/09/05 01:08 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

Was riding my four-wheeler today and found these very large mushrooms beside the path. I live in southern Ohio, these mushrooms are extremely large, they are pinkish red on top, about eight inches from one side to the next also round, there are no gills it looks like a sponge underneath, is about four or five inches tall here are some pics of them.

It's a bolete.

Try scratching the tube surface with a fingernail and tell us how long it takes for it to change color.

Look *very* closely at the surface of the stem, especially near the top, and describe if there is a very fine net-like pattern of ridges there. They can be very tiny and difficult to see.

What kind of trees were they growing under?

Happy mushrooming!

yeah, if it bruises blue instantly, you have a poisonous Bolete. If not, it's most likely a bicolor, which is a choice edible.

When you scratch the tube surface it can take up to an hour for it to change color. Does the tube surface change color or just become a stronger slightly darker shade of its current color?

Do they have any particular odor inside if you cut one in half?

You say there is a net-like pattern on the stem. Does it extend more than halfway down the stem?

Happy mushrooming!
