Ohio Hunters
    #4066086 - 04/17/05 07:27 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

Just introducing myself to the forum and wondering if any ohio hunters have had any luck this season. There is an abundance of cow fields where i live (south-eastern ohio, near wheeling WV), and i was wondering if anyone had some tips. It is supposed to rain soon and i'm starting to scout out some areas to hunt.

The next morning my parents said we were going to the hospital. I thought two of my friends were sitting in the front seat and i thanked them for getting me away from my crazy parents.
Even in the emergency room i would see paint flying off the walls spiraling all through the room, and would hallucinate holding a pipe or a cig in my hand and i would take a nice long drag, blow out the smoke, look at my hands, and nothing would be there.

You won't find actives in Ohio other than gyms.

EDIT:
Actually i don't comepletely agree with GatorB.
I'd imagine that Panaeolus subbalteatus grows in around where you live, considering that they grow just about everywhere, but i dont live in Ohio and have never been there...

Also, if you want to hunt for Gymnopilus spp. then no cow fields for you bro.
I would do some serious research.
Speaking of research, if you would take the time to search the shroomery for the info you seek then you will probably find it (i dont think anyone has made any active finds yet this season).

Thought i might as well add that last part so any moderators dont have to take the trouble...

So no active mushrooms can grow from the thousands of cow patties in my town just because i live ohio?

The temperatures in the 70's here lead me to believe i will be able to find some cubes, correct me if i am wrong please, for i am a rookie mushroom hunter

Maybe we are all wrong about this. Maybe cubes really do grow in Ohio. Why don't you spend all summer searching your thousands of cow pies and report back what you find...

Or you could believe those of us who know when we tell you they don't grow there.

Please stop begging the question. Psilocybe cubensis does not grow wild in Ohio.

Hey man, when I lived in Southeastern Tennessee, there weren't even cubes THERE. The farthest north they get is Atlanta, MAYBE Chattanooga.

Yeah, MAYBE you could find pan subbs, but they're elusive and it takes a bunch to get a good trip. For those, look in horse stables or horse-manure-compost lawns.

I don't even fuck with gyms because they're out in the wild; I've heard they taste like SHIT and are almost impossible to get down. So whatever.

Your best bet is to invest about $150 and grow em.

Exactly, if you use the search function, you would get a much better answer than you're getting, I know at least 2 ppl (not mentioning names) that have posted some detailed information recently about gyms, how to find and id.

GL

Happy Hunting

I have found them as far north as northern Cobb county.

There is a technique that takes no more than $20.

As for loc., I live in the middle of SC, which is further north than Atl. and there are definitely cubes here. And I know for a fact they grow into NC.
I know there is a northern limit, but I can't see cubes not growing on a dung pile in NYS, I could be wrong.
IMO, hunting is just a hobby, cultivation is the best way to go  :smirk:

Happy Hunting

Not flaming, but I would disagree strongly with GatorB and Lysergic_Milkman.

Psilocybe Caerulipes grows in Ohio for certain. Not only I say this, but the resident expert MJ_Shroomer has the same opinion. I believe a close friend of his has found them in Ohio (Cinnci i believe).

They grow in Ohio for sure, most prolifically in deciduous forests near river valleys in disturbed flood plains. Please see my post:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...74c01bea6211771

Prints from these mushrooms were confirmed microscopically by a certain MR_ that is no longer with us.

I feel that I was pretty detailed with habitat description.

The audubon ID guide has incorrect information concerning season. These are most certainly a spring mushroom, which perhaps explains while people on the shroomery arent finding them. But believe me people who dont frequent the OMC find them in the thousands every spring. They're WELL known... just trust me on this.

They grow in Ohio and if you know the season, the habitat, and what to look for, you will find them sooner or later.

I updated the post I just linked to. Read it, if you have any questions ask, though i feel i was pretty damned elaborate on how to find.

JUST GET OUT AND LOOK!
