It's an odd concept though.. "reading the word as a whole" would imply that we process the word "computer" as the string of letters c o m p u t e r and the image of them aligned. I think it's more likely that our brain is able to use the first and last letter as a guidepoint to narrow down the options for what the word might be, and after guessing at what the word is, we make the decision based on the context of the word. Pattern recognition.
