I started a website on tripod like 5 years ago called The Dude's Lair.
Well, I get an e-mail from some guy today saying he owns Thedudeslair.com.

The retainer to get a layer to even look at this would be in the neighborhood of $5000. Are you that big a threat to this guy? I doubt it.

Well, basically it's snatching up the rights to a well known name in the domain name in the hopes that someone would buy it off of you. It was pretty common in the mid to late '90's when people were buying such domain names as "microsoft.com" or "whitehouse.org" in the hopes of making some money. It was ruled illegal a while back, but there are some who still try.......

I wasn't stressing it that much, was just wondering if he actually COULD sue me..How he actually came across my shitty little site I will never know...I get like 1 hit a year

Firstly you are not in any danger, and like has been said it is very expensive just to file a suit and in this case I doubt he has copyright or TM on this site. Its obvious to me he's just a jackass  :grin:

Start by asking him for his record of TM/Copyright, that will be a good laugh for sure.
The Shroomery gets a fair bit of legal threats similar to this, and I've had many enjoyable responses to them all. I usually respond with something like:

"Thank you for your email.

haha your page should now be an all out war on thedudeslair.com. Start by putting a marker on the bottom of your page saying something to the effect of "The dudes lair belongs to me and no one else, anyone else claiming to own the dudes lair can go get fucked." Then email him and tell him you straightened things out on your page for him.
