Discovered odd "new" WinXP settings
    #4286979 - 06/12/05 01:40 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

I was messing around trying to get my computer to use my USB connected cell-phone as an internet connection when I discovered a properties dialog within Network Connections that I know wasn't there "before" (sometime in the past year or two :tongue2:).

There have been countless Windows Updates since I last used Network Connections that I suspected, at first, it was part of some patch. It does look rather weird tho, being as I have no idea what those allowed tick boxes are for precisely. Anybody think this is weird?

Are you sure that's new? I remember that from way back when, but I could be imagining things. There's been over 19 updates since sp2 came out, and I'm sure other updates as well... new though?

Yeah that's not new, man :smile:

It's been there since WinXP came out. Part of the Windows Firewall :wink:

Start->Settings->Network Connections...
hmmm, what's this lil' "Internet connection" thing I've never noticed.
Right Click->Properties then Click Settings

XP didn't have a firewall until after SP2. what the heck are those allowed check boxes? I have plenty other services allowed via firewall (soulseek, dc++, mIRC) and i don't see them listed in there (but they are listed in Firewall exceptions where they SHOULD be). The only telltale I see is the prefix BT: which could signify bittorrent. But this circles back to why the many other services are not listed.

I remain suspicious

Yes it did.

Microsoft Windows XP helps to provide more security in the form of a firewall that is known as the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF). Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) includes the new Windows Firewall, which replaces the ICF.

I stand corrected on the existance of a pre-SP2 firewall. I remember now that the big hoopla was the SP2 firewall was actually enabled by default and provided an actual UI for manipulating it.

I tried turning the firewall off completely via services, verified it's status and noted that this icon still remains fully functional. The only gateway I should be using is my router. Here's a shot I found interesting.

That "Internet Connection" icon is the icon for your router. It's the way Windows XP interfaces with the UPNP service running on your router. You can add/change/remove port-forwarding using the Properties button on that control app.

that stands to reason. I don't deny the possibility i've long overlooked this icon, i rarely use XP.

there is a lack of interface for doing any add/remove. it seems i can only allow/disallow the listed items which I have not added via this mechanism, and the mechanisms I have utilised for ports and exceptions would include a larger list than what appears here. at first i suspected the shown list was services currently in use. killing those services or starting different ones that require firewall conditions made no reflection in this list. I mean, if it is what you say it is then it's a real piece of M$ kludge.

Yeah I would NEVER use the shitty XP interface to change your router settings! The interface is shite :smirk:

That icon doesn't always show up. I think you need both the SSDP Discovery Service and the Network Location Awareness services to be running in XP before that icon will show up. Oh and definitely the UPNP service.
