I love Mike Doughty, though I think his work with Soul Coughing outshines his solo stuff by leagues and miles. He's a great live performer even solo though.

Get the album Irresistible Bliss, and then the album El Oso. They have a lot of live albums that are great too.

That's a loaded question.

What else do you listen to, so I know in what vein I should respond?

Well, if you don't listen to Talking Heads you're missing out on the best music ever created, in my humble opinion.

Other than that, if you want chill stuff like Doughty:

A Band of Bees
The Album Leaf
Beachwood Sparks
The Beta Band (the album "Hot Shots" or "The Three EPs")
Dirty on Purpose
Earlimart - Everyone Down Here
Elbow - A Cast of Thousands
The Glands
Grandaddy
The Notwist (similar to Radiohead, german, lyrics in english)
Mercury Rev
The Mobius Band
The National
Pinback
The Shins
Spoon

Talking Heads albums you need to have:

Remain in Light
Speaking in Tongues
Fear of Music
More Songs About Buildings and Food

That should be enough music to keep you occupied for a while.
