Differences between L.Williamsii and L.Diffusa
    #424962 - 10/14/01 09:54 AM (22 years, 4 months ago)

Is the characteristic tuft of hair found at the centre of Peyotes absent in L.diffusa?
What ways are there to tell the two species apart?

I think yes. At least mine hasn't a tuft. And also absent on young specimens of williamsi.

Thanks for the help. The thing is, i bought two L.williamsii (advertised as 2-3 years old, 2-3 cm in diameter) from an online cactus shop, here in the uk.
When they arrived, i was perfectly satisfied that they were definitely genuine L.williamsii until i saw this photo of L.diffusa on erowid.org, which actually looks quite similar to my cacti.

http://www.erowid.org/plants/show_image.php3?image=peyote/lophophora_diffusa2.jpg

However, my two cacti have a clear tuft of hair in the centre and are closer to the colouring of L.williamsii shown in your picture (bluey/green almost)

Does the tuft of hair DEFINITELY mean it is williamsii?

If they have a tuft, then yes. Although there are young L. williamsii that don't have a tuft, I have 3 of them ;) More distinctive is that the rips of L. diffusa are more shalow than the ones of williamsii, and they are rounder. In the above pics you can see what I mean.

And beside L. diffusa is much rarer and if you would get one instead of williamsii, you should be glad.
