The Kratom Extraction That Almost Was
    #4242889 - 06/01/05 01:33 AM (18 years, 10 months ago)

After much deliberation in trying to clear my schedule for some time to start on an extraction of Kratom, I found the time today to do it. I will not outline the procedure or list chemicals or materials as of yet. I've not seen very good results of extractions or even processes described by that many people. Thus I decided to try out a few ideas of my own to see what yields the best results if any to be published later.

Unfortunately not all went as planned on this trial.

All started off well, the kratom laid out on some paper and placed in a beaker.

The first step in the process:

The mixture was transferred to what was thought to be more hardy glass vessel that could handle the volume i wished to work with. Large mason jar. Which was heated on low heat on the stove. The temperature only reached 54C before the glass cracked and the bottom separated from the rest of the jar, spilling the liquid all over the stove and onto the floor.

Unfortunately that's where it ended for the day, followed by about an hour and a half of clean up.

Maybe waterbathing is a more viable root...

Or else use metalic containers to heat up mixtures on stove

Only special glass can take that kind of treatment and not break. Even borosilicate glass will crack if it's cooled or heated too rapidly. I think you knew that but were in a hurry. I've been there, done that. Use a pan with anything in it to raise the glass. You could use pebbles and set your beaker on it with water in the pan to transfer the heat. Sort of a double boiler.

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)

The mistake I made was thinking the mason jar would be okay. In the setup you can clearly see the wire gauze. I assumed it'd be as sturdy as the borosilicate beakers while being heated over the wire gauze with the porcelin in the middle. It woulda done fine if i left the heat lower, but it was raised just a bit thinking it wouldn't be too harsh to crack the glass. But frequently used glass over such a heat obviously can't take it even with a porecelin wire gauze. Next time i'll just accept the slow cooking of a double boiler.

Don't be sorry about the mess to me though, it was at Sheik's house.

A towel folded many times could serve as a riser,as well as suspending the jar in the liquid so it doesnt touch the bottom using a pasta strainer that has almost the same diameter as the opening of the pot but more or less half its depth! You could even suspend the jar in a stocking and tie that on a high place/holder above the stove if ya feelin kinky!

Improvising is fun!

I suspected the ceramic on the wire gauze would have prevented this. Unfortunately it didn't.
