its amazing watching the rocks go from dead to living after some time. The whole tank once it gets going just snow balls into a thriving ecosystem. When i settle down i will invest mucho deneiro into the salt water tank.

Do you use flouro's or Metal halide lighting?

just plain fluorescent tubes that came with the tank. when i bought the tank, i said it was for a marine setup, and the shop guys sorted out the lighting for me, so it wasn't a choice thing. what's the difference? i thought that all grow-type lights were not recommended - i think i'm getting at least one blue tube, to support future corals and to accentuate colourings.

in the pics are dierdre the sea-spider-crab, rollo the bigass shrimplike thing, grumpy the firefish and two clownfish called nemo (special stripe) and sushi

Really cool!

I have a small freshwater and have been toying with the idea of a larger salt tank.

I am however not rich, and kinda busy... Is it as expensive as i heard? I know the fish are more expensive...

How is the maintance? Similar to a fresh tank or more?

Obviously i know nothing of salt tanks except that they are cool... Where did you learn about it, on the net?

it costs more at the start, and is more maintenance, but is well worth it. i joined a forum just like this one (maybe a little stuffier) for info, and bought a book

Is that some type of shrimp?

I have two ghost shrimp in my tank, they have alot of personality  :cool2:

Your pictures are pretty decent.  Did you have to use a manual focus?

metal halide i read is good to use (but expensive) if you have hard corals

maybe look into rigging up a moonlight set? not so expensive

ya, that's Rollo, named after an eighty-something mutton-chopped major-colonel type neighbour  i think he's some kind of shrimpy dude.

Rollo (or King Rollo to give him his full and proper name) has purple chest hair, and likes to preen his impressive antennae, and to hang upside down in cave areas of the tank, waiting for nice things to happen by. here's another Rollo shot, first au naturel and then inverted so you can see el capitan better:

these were taken with an ixus II digital - i wish i still had my old canon AE1 with a tripod, that'd take some monster shots

boo - what's a moonlight set?

adding moonlights to your aquarium mimics moonlighting cycles...making your reef even happier (and looks cool too - your soft corals and critters will start to glow a bit)

regular moonlights cost a shitload...but you can buy some leds through ebay easily or DIY like hte link above
