Poor hermit crab

My small hermit crab has been hiding under the water dish for a week and a half now, so I decided to dig in there and get him out. The bedding I use is Bed-a-Beast, and the crabs seem to love tunneling themselves into places.

Well, I lift the water dish, and dig the lil bugger out and find broken pieces of his arms/legs/whatever they are laying around him. I look in his shell and he was further in his shell than he has normally been, so I thought he was dead. I set him in the corner of the tank and filled the food/water and went to go mix some records.

As I'm sitting there I see him start moving around, so I go to check it out. It seems he has grown back whatever he lost while under that water dish. But he's moving slowly and sluggishly. I hope he's OK, and isn't/wasn't in too much pain.

I thought when they did that they just shed a layer of skin, like snakes. I didn't think they would actually drop their appendages and grow new ones.

wat to go, you crushed your hermit crab :frown:

No I'm kidding.  I bet he's fine.  They shed, and often times it resembles full appendages, when really its not.  No worries, if he's up and moving around.  I'd take him out and play with him, check out his legs and make sure they're ok.
