Curly salvia leaves? (w/ pics)
    #4166693 - 05/12/05 02:13 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

Okay, I have another salvia question for you guys.

I'm still acclimating my plants to their new home, so I leave them in the humidity tent for most of the day. They come out for about 2 out of 24 hours. They get several hours a day of indirect sunlight, and their temps don't fluctuate much. The leaves are a nice green color, and the new growth is coming in fine, so I think they're in decent conditions.

However, some of the leaves are doing something wierd. They're starting to curl under. They don't look wilted, and if you touch one, it's still firm. Just last week they were in too much humidity and the stalks started putting out roots, but I've since adjusted their humidity, so I don't think it's a moisture issue. What's going on here?

My girlfriend postulates that the leaves are curling under because they don't want to touch the sides of the tent. The plastic I use only fits around the edges of the pot, but I think it still has room to grow in there.

Whadda ya think?

No, no fertilizer. It's planted in a mixture of topsoil, peat, and perlite. About 2:1:1.

Do you think I should fertilize them?

I water them every three days, and mist them a couple of times a day. The soil never gets dried out.

I've been apprehensive to water them more frequently than that because I've read that overwatering divinorums is particullarly bad for them.

Id say its root damage from trasplanting. How long after trans plant were those pix?

I have one that does the exact same thing. I rooted it maybe a month ago, it started to curl like last week. Other than that, it's doing fine.

Then all i can say is give them time. Maybe the roots are to small to feed the large cutting well. Roots grow fast though.

They are coming out the drain hole, and the plant is not underwatered. I haven't really thought about it until I saw this post, I'll keep an eye on it from now on to see if I can figure out what's causing it. I have others growing under the exact same conditions.

but the pale green is not very good, aren't you giving it too much light?

Hmmm... That's a possibility. I transplanted them about a week ago. They were rooted in a clear plastic cup, and I could see the roots all pushed up against the sides, so I re-potted into a larger pot. Maybe it's taking the roots a while to bounce back? I think I have a good potting mixture, so I guess time will tell.

Another possibility. Maybe I should give them even less light? I'll try that out.

I don't know the exact RH (no hydrometer), but I think it's high. Previously, the stalks were putting out roots, so I lowered the humidity, and the shoots dried up and fell off. I think I've got an acceptable RH presently.

Thanks for your input, everyone! Any more tips or advice is greatly appreciated.

Salvia can handle a lot of light, I grew them in nearly full sun conditions. The leaves have only done this since you opened up the humidity tent correct? They need to be acclimatized very slowly, the older sets of leaves usually do not adjust properly and curl/dry up. It is the new sets of leaves which adjust and should grow normally if given time.

I never took my plant out of the humidity tent for 2 hours a day, what is your goal with this? I think it may be stressing the plant. With humidity tents I cut a small hole for airflow and over the course of 2-3 weeks I make the holes slowly bigger until there is no tent left.

Making more abrupt changes may worsen it's condition. Your plant looks quite stretched and weak, it may not be getting enough light.. but thats probably a result of a combination of things. Any more abrupt changes may worsen its condition. Also make sure the pot is nice and deep, salvia doesn't like transplanting all that often.

The soil is not supposed to be wet all the time. The saliva plants hate wet soil all the time. Buy some coca coir bricks and mix the soil 50/50 soil and coco coir. The soil then is dry as hell after 4-5 days. I only water my salivas every 5 days. U can see they are getting too much water, hence why they are dropping over.

Buy some coco coir asap and mix some new soil for your babies. Or use perilite, buy coco coir is so cheap I would just use that. They love humidity, and humidity suffices for watering. You are aware that the plant absorbs water through the leaves as well as the roots. So by misting every day you just brought the watering down to almost once a week.

The #1 issue is soil and the roots being damp. Goto IAMSHAMAN and read on saliva growing, just click on plants at www.iamshaman.com

I was experiencing the exact same thing until I realized the soil they like is dry soil.

Thanks again for the advice, bro.

I really don't want to replant them for a second time in one week... I think they're going to be okay for now. I just need to get a feel for these plants and what they require.

I appreciate the feedback from all of you.
