I bought a pair of birkenstock sandals about 9 years ago and they still hold up...not to mention they are the most comfortable shoes I own.

I wear Tevas, despite my above post praising the Chacos. Mine are some kind of non-leather which still stay comfortable and maintain their integrity when wet. Nothing beats the comfort of a well-broken-in pair of Birks though!

It totally depends on what you want to do with them. For an all-around best-out-there super-comfortable sandal, nothing comes even close to the birkenstock. You can re-sole them if you wear the bottoms off for like $40, and the initial sandal will cost you between $80-$120. I tend to get good quality sandals though. Take your birks in a heavy rain storm, the ocean, or on rocky terrain (not known for their good grip on rocky hikes) and they will get destroyed in a hurry. A friend of mine wore hers when walking on some fire rock in Puerto Rico and the rock went straight through the bottoms! I have a pair of birks that I've had since junior high (about 12+ years) and nothing is more comfortable. The hippies have it right!

Now, if you're going to abuse them, get them wet, do serious hiking or get them any where near sharp rocks or salt water, you want chacos. Like Gr8fulJ said, they are super and you can walk over the worst kinds of rock with them and have no problem (I pranced right over that fire rock!). There are different kinds of tread for different sports (rocky, water, etc.) so consider that when you buy. They will be about $100, but well worth the investment! I have had my pair for about 5 years now, and the bottoms hardly show any wear at all. I've taken then in the ocean, the rainforest, the desert, through lava rock fields and hiking on granite and sandstone, and they have held up marvelously! They are totally adjustable, comfortable, and cleanable. Many of my ourdoorsey friends have and recommend them. The best sandal for abusing ever!

Just my opinion

this is only for casual walking. as i'm going to do a lot of climbing and walking around the mountains this year, I also need something of that sort. I'll check out the chacos for that. thanks again to all  :sun:

if your doing hiking, climbing ect i like the keen brand with the covered toes, my argument for these is when i backpacking my feet are my way back out. so hurt or damaged feet=no or diminished travel. esp if your crossing unfamiliar rivers and what not. my 2 cents
