What's up with hushmail? 4/23/05 - 7:30pm PST
    #4089871 - 04/23/05 10:40 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Ok, I already know I can get a little paranoid sometimes. Anyway, when I go to check my hushmail account I get the message:

The Secret Service is watching.
-Agent Leth and Clown
Jeet 3k Inc

What the fuck?! Even if it is a joke and their server is down for repairs it's a pretty fucked up joke. I deleted cookies and tried to enter through a proxy and the message stayed the same; so, I think it's advertising for their web design service while the server is being serviced, but still...WTF?!

Do they shut it down if they're being scanned by the feds or something? Maybe I'm dense, and a little too serious at times, but I don't get it. Anybody have any ideas?

They changed the message 20 minutes after I posted. Their server is down.

Leth and Clown seem like hacker names, along with their crew "Jeet 3k". i'm guessing hushmail got hacked. just my opinion based on seeing other sites get hacked before.

Regardless, it's somewhat of a wakeup call. I mean, how safe is anyone really? I think I'm being safe by using encrypted email services, surfing through proxies, mail forwarding, etc... It's all just a layer of padding. Anyone with unproper gov. access and 5ki||5 is gonna' break through all of that jiffy split. The only way to be truly secure is to not use any means of electronic commerce (bank cards, credit...) or communication (telephones are digital too) and drop off the face of the earth altogether.

I've read about how they're working on technology that allows digital communications through any electrical socket in your home. Imagine that! Anything plugged into the wall can become a transmitter or reciever for communications! Talk about big brother...

Digital television was supposed to be a federal mandate by 2005. It was moved forward to 2007 because the major industry players couldn't play fair and decide who gets what piece of the pie, don't think MS didn't have a hand in it as well. Anyway, digital television will be a mandate in this decade. In 2000 I wrote a thesis paper on digital television and privacy. When digital TV becomes standard they will have on board capabillities for ecommerce and will send all viewing data to your subscriber. That means they will know what you watch, when you watch it, what you buy and when you buy it and they'll be able to custom taylor commercial advertising according to your demographics, psychographics, buying patterns and viewing habits.

I think I'm becoming a technophobe...

"In recent hours we have been made aware that security was compromised at the domain registrar responsible for the hushmail.com domain. For a brief period, this domain was forwarded to a server belonging to an unidentified party, which resulted in our web page being unavailable or appearing defaced.

There was no unauthorized access to any of the Hush servers. Data managed by Hush was not compromised. During this period, email sent to hushmail.com will not have been delivered.

Please accept our sincerest apologies for the inconvenience this has caused. We take this incident very seriously, and will continue to update this page as more information becomes available."

I wouldn't panic, they should be back up relatively soon.

Their registrar got hacked. No other servers were hacked. Your e-mail is safe. Check the the site again and you will see an announcement.
