growing cactus outdoors...
    #4084225 - 04/22/05 10:22 AM (12 years, 5 days ago)

some questions...

1: how tolerant to cold are they (san pedro/peruvian torch)...? if i was to plant them outside, and the winters at times get below freezing, would they survive...?

2: how difficult would it be to have them live on there own outside? could i say, plant ten of them out in an open feild, comeback a couple years later, and have them multiplied...? or would this only work in the hot rocky desert...?

I'm almost positive they'd die in below freezing temperature, but you can definitely grow them outdoors year-round in the south. It's possible to grow them outdoors without care, but i think it would be hard in the states, you'd need the right place that gets just enough rain.

hmm, i guess the best idea would be to take them inside for the winters, eh?

which brings to mind another question, how well would they do if i was to keep them inside by a window or something? would i need a heated light...?

Yeah, definitely best to take them indoors during winter months. It should do fine with indirect lighting next to a window, unless the glass is making the air around it really cold (which has killed a few of my plants in the past). I'm sure a heating pad would do well, or a heated light. I'm not an expert plant or cacti grower, hopefully more knowledgeable people will reply.

Most cactus can take a mild freezing, but not a really harsh winter.
