Strange problem...

I'm using the old fashioned MMGG cake method, and I'm having a rather odd issue with my latest crop--the mushrooms insist on growing out of the BOTTOMS of the cakes.

Reading the tips here about the benefits of casing, I think it might be because the shrooms prefer the area covered in vermiculite. Any thoughts?

The mushrooms are growing from the bottom because that is where the moisture is. That verm at the bottom is damp, right?

Entire cake should be rolled in verm, this will definitely prevent the problems you are having.

Not obviously damper than the rest of my terrarium. I've had a lot of trouble getting RH levels right (I have a ultrasonic humidifier with only one setting and I have yet to find a reasonably priced hygrometer that doesn't top out at 85%), but some of the cakes have flowered normally.

I'm wondering if now I should take a hint from my cakes and dunk and roll them.

No dunk or roll?! Damn yes that will screw you bigtime. And btw stay away from MMGG method, it's way too old much better teks exist like PF.

I got a hygrometer at radio shack for twenty-30 bucks, also a thermometer. And yes, wonder no more, dunk & roll.
