Easter Island

So this proff of mine told us about Easter Island the other day....its some scary stuff.....basically it was a florishing civilization and society on the island, the built huge Moa monoliths and placed them around the outskirts of the island. They relied on fishing as a main food source and had to drink fresh water from pools and ponds on the island. They had an abundance of Chillean palms. They used the palm trees to move the Moas to the edges of the island. They also used the palm trees for fire to cook on as well as to build boats to fish. They made their houses out of palms. Eventually the last tree was cut down. They could not move the monoliths, they could not fish, they could not build fires to cook. There was no more water on the island because the soil blew into the ponds, everything eroded. They began to starve. They began to fight and kill one another. They began to eat eachother. They toppled and dismembered their monoliths, smashing the eyes out and replaced them with skinny terrifying idols. Their civilization collapsed because they did not conserve their resources. They did not notice the last tree fall.

Fox News told me that you could cut down all trees and everything would be way better than before.

Yeah I spent a couple months learning about easter island... it's really sad. It seems that "we" just shrug the fact that we screwed up a smaller ecosystem and continue following our nasty traits. People waste things and take too much crap for granted, atleast in north america.
Go somewhere like the phillipines and come here, you'll realize the incredibly huge potential for being more efficiant. Hell, turning off the tap when you brush your teeth and not leaving lights on saves buckers and it's so retardedly easy.
Sad and kinda funny thing is that when the earth's screwed up, I mean realllly screwed up I'll be laughing in my biodegradable hemp grave. Sucks to be my grandkids!!

The sad thing is, if you look into ancient civilizations, many of them collapsed because of environmental changes and or depletion.

America is probably more ecologically conscious and behaves in a more 'earth friendly' manner than any other nation on earth, especially these non-civilized nations that we seem to associate with earth-friendly all of the time.

Er, no. Sorry that I don't fall into your "western society sucks" moronic, childish belief-plan. Maybe you could read the plethora of magazines and publications created by non-western scientists and use their methods to clean up the environment. Africa, for example, is thriving and flourishing.

Whoa, settle down killer.
Although the US has implemented many plans over the past 20 years to combat global warming, pollution, etc. it's just not enough.
It boils down to the fact the entire planet needs to get off fossil fuels.

I'm anxiously awaiting for some third world nation to think of something like that Or, most likely, Whitey McWestern will pull everyones ass from the fire again, and then get blamed ad nauseum for anything that goes wrong afterwards.

People are still far too wasteful. Look at the rate of trash america's producing every year. Each coming year they yeild even more, and we still haven't come up with a logical plan to deal with this disposed waste.
Not to mention we're abusing the resources we have right now and take them from granted. They could be used in a much less wasteful mannor, or we can try avoiding them when it's appropriate. I don't think we should live in straw huts and burn blubber oils for light and warmth, but seriously.

i thought that much of the theory of Easter Island was just that, theory - and that they weren't really quite sure what the civilisation that lived there was like?

So we, as the west, will pull everyone's ass from the fire that we created. Many parts of Africa do fine, but then western nations come in and, for example, export millions of their workforce(the slave trade) so that we don't have to do as much work for ourselves. Or another example to look at would be native Amazon tribes. They do fine on their own, and using slash and burn techniques they are able to use their resources to a level of efficiency that is astonishing. I believe its common for many of the tribes to slash and burn several acres and use those acres for several years, then they would leave for about 40 years to repeat the process in other areas, and return to the same plot that was back to the state it was at when they first used it. Of course, we then come to them living on their little plot of land and tell them those resources could be better used by us, and then we displace them to clear cut the land. Easter Island is a very poignant example of what goes wrong when you run out of an intergal resource. There's definately a ton of parallels to western society. For one, when the palms started to dwindle war broke out. Well, oil reserves are dwindling and look at what the west is doing in the Middle East. If you think the western world will be some sort of international savior, check out this site www.peakoil.org and see that we will actually be the destroyers of any semblance of modern civilization, if not mankind as a whole. You may now place your foot in your mouth Soopa.
