not default user, the *.default folder in the c:\documents and settings\owner\application data\mozilla\firefox\profiles

it should have a bunch of random letters/numbers then .default - that folder contains the default profile. there should also be another folder in there with random letters/numbers and then .whatever_you_named_the_new_firefox_profile - just copy everything from the .default folder to the .whatever_you_named_the_new_firefox_profile folder

Definitely modify the services if you feel comfortable. You don't have to be a total resource-whore to want to do this, it really does waste a shitload of resources. I don't game or anything, but you'll like the extra crap not running on your computer. It'll make it a lot friendlier.

Another tip for ya bro - Go to google and do a search for ccleaner or crap cleaner. It scans your registry and deletes stuff that you don't need (Don't worry, it prompts you first!) and old file associations, mru's from the start menu, dead shortcuts, etc. It does what you'd generally do for a pc-tune up but it's all automated. You can do it yourself manually, but who's going to pick apart their registry and everything. It's just really helpful and you don't have to get super indepth and that's why I always recommend it.

And good job installing firefox! You can't actually "delete" or uninstall internet explorer as it's tied to the operating system. You also need it for windows updates which should be the first thing you do after you set up some security on your system. People bitch and moan about sp2, but it's not half bad. Chances are that on a new computer, or a computer without an absolute wad sitting behind it you can install sp2 and not have a problem. There are rare occurences where even a tech savvy person can run into horrendous problems, but you can almost always reciprocate that situation. Besides... if you have something that's so incredibly crucial, you should have it backed up to cd already. That's a no brainer.

I always suggest a format if you don't have valuable data on the hard drive.

If you have a newer computer and Windows XP you should have PnP (Plug n Play) keys on the hardware.

If it is an older HP, get the drivers before you format.

Good Luck
