Website Exposes Drug Informers March 25, 2005 jointogether.org
Angry because her boyfriend was turned in by a police drug informant, a Boston-area woman retaliated by posting the identity and personal information about the informant online, the Boston Globe reported March 21.
"In this day and age, you can't be a rat and not have people know," said the woman, speaking on condition of anonymity. "I think it kind of opens up people's eyes in town to people who are doing shady deals." The woman's boyfriend was charged with drug possession after police and federal agents raided her home accompanied by drug-sniffing dogs.
"This punk has bragged on several occasions about doing a controlled buy to bust a known local dealer so he could get a lesser sentence for getting caught with shrooms, ecstasy, steroids, and funny money," she posted on the site. "He has admitted to being a snitch to various people."
A local man fighting marijuana charges, Sean Bucci, set up the website, which currently has 800 profiles of alleged informants. Police are worried that the site will hurt their ability to work with informants, while some informants are worried that their lives may be in danger.
One FBI informant recalled receiving a call from a man he was helping to investigate. "I'm looking at your information on the website," the suspect told him. "You're an informant."
"I ran as fast as I could," said the informant, who asked that his name not be used. The man has not worked for the FBI since the call.
The website has about 7,000 registered users and has received about 1.5 million hits.
The Globe did not reveal the URL of the website because of concerns that some of the listings could be bogus. The site contains a disclaimer that the information posted "may not be 100 percent accurate and should be used for information/entertainment purposes only."
Supporters of the website say it is protected by free-speech laws. "We specifically ask people not to add any information that's related to violent crimes, because we don't agree with violent crimes," a spokesperson for the site said. "But as far as drug problems, and people setting people up just to get out of their own problems, that's a no-no in our books."
note: The Globe may not reveal the URL of the website, but I will. http://www.whosarat.com/

While I do see the possibility of something such as defamation or being framed by using that site, I think that it's definitely a unique and potentially useful expression of free speech

We need something like that for everybody, whether it be informants, undercovers, narcs, etc. The users need to be protected, and free speech is on their side.

"In this day and age, you can't be a rat and not have people know," said the woman, speaking on condition of anonymity." That's fucking excellent...a rat ratting on rats while trying to protect her own identity... that's a new level of hypocrisy right there.
