Clarke plots pot U-turn
March 18, 2005
thesun.co.uk

LABOUR is planning to scrap its softly-softly laws on cannabis in a bid to defuse a teenage health timebomb.

Home Secretary Charles Clarke has ordered a rethink after pot was linked to mental illness.

The U-turn comes just 15 months after it was downgraded from Class B to C.

Mr Clarke?s predecessor David Blunkett relaxed the law to free up police to tackle more serious crime.

Those found in possession of cannabis now escape with a telling off.

And only persistent users and dealers are prosecuted. But the move has sparked an explosion in pot-smoking among teenagers who wrongly think it has been decriminalised.

Seizures have soared by a third and cops have spent ?1million on posters warning it is still illegal.

Now Mr Clarke is considering making it a Class B drug again. His move was prompted by a study linking regular cannabis use to mental illness.

Experts say teens who regularly smoke pot are 4? times more likely to suffer psychosis or schizophrenia in their 20s. Last night Mr Clarke launched a probe by health watchdogs.

Ministers are also anxious to head off a pre-election Tory assault over Labour?s record on crime.

A senior Whitehall source said: "It is clear that the downgrading of cannabis was a big mistake. If action needs to be taken, Mr Clarke will do so ? and quickly."

Mr Clarke was fiercely opposed to downgrading the drug when it was railroaded through by Mr Blunkett.

Medics now claim ministers would have blocked the change if the latest studies had been available then.

They show that kids who smoke the drug three times or more aged 15 were three times more likely to suffer mental illness by the age of 26. Shrinks say 80 per cent of new patients they treat for psychotic symptoms have a history of cannabis use.

Tories said the U-turn was a "humiliating reaction to a spectacular failure".

Shadow Home Secretary David Davis said: I welcome this overdue admission that they got this wrong.

Since the law changed use of hard drugs has never been higher and cannabis use has never been stronger.

The dreadful decision to downgrade cannabis has sent out mixed messages about the dangers of drugs.

"The Government will now have to clear up the mess of its hasty and ill-thought through declassification."

There have been lots of studies saying this same exact thing. They have all been debunked and shown to be pieces of crap because of so many other factors.

All I can say is that 4 out of 6 of my old school friends developed psychotic problems after heavy cannabis use and none of them had a history of mental illness in their family.

Strange that isn't it?

Abuse of ANY drug (including cannabis) will get you into trouble.

They won't. Legalization will result in more users and more frequent use. This is a bad thing in their eyes and nothing will change that.
