Drying using silica sand?

AFOAF found something called silica sand at a hardware store and was wondering if this is the same as silica gel and if it will work as good to dry?

silaca sand from the hardware store cannot be used to significantly dry anything.

silica sand is used to mix mortar. it has also been shown to cause lung damage, and thus should not be used for any other purpose. even my neighbors cat fails to appriciate it.

but i think the new cat litter crystals could be used to keep things dry- theyre silica beads that wick up quite a bit of moisture (i have a cat- they turn yellow when full of cat pee. ew. i know, more than you wanted to know...) theres several brands out there now... you wouldnt need but a small bag. also, silica packs found in packaged pill bottles or shoes (or from the cap't) can also be used to KEEP things dry, but not dry them out.

but i doubt theyd work as well as drierite or damp rid does for drying things out.
