Well, The guys have given you some great options. But.....I like my food dehydrator. The Unit i have is called the Galloping Gourmet Snack Express. It has temp control.....which is a must if you are using one. I keep it set at 85 degrees.....and my shrooms are cracker dry in a day and a half...tops. And i can honestly say this works just as good as the other ways. The key is not to use too much heat. You can get one on Ebay really cheap. Alot of the dehydrators don't have a temp control....so be careful.

This may not be great for a larger operation but heres what I do. I put Anhydrous Calcium Chloride (Brand name silica in the kitty litter section of your local x-Mart) with the mushies in a closed container. With only a couple mushrooms they dry 100% in a couple of days. Make sure not to let any of the Calcium Chloride touch the musheis.

My friend has tried using dessicants before, but had little luck with them. She lives in a very dry climate and so she just sets the fruit out on a plate and puts them in front of a small fan. A day later they are cracker dry. Three days later the ones with the dessicant are half dry and starting to rot. She still stores them with dessicants, just doesn't use them for the initial drying.

I have had great luck with desicant. I get the flower drying kind. It has little blue cyrstals in it that turn pink when wet and you just throw it in the oven. I use a ceramic container, put about 3/4 in of dessicant in it. I use the ceramic container so I can just keep the dessicant, which can be very messy, in the same container I dry in. Then I put one layer of paper towel in, and put the mushies on top. Works great. Cracker dry in two days.

I personally have just kept them out by the fan on some paper towels for 2-3 days and they turn cracker dry by themselfs...Course, if you had the money and wanted to play it safe, you'd buy the damp-rid stuff

For the record... dessicant works... but is sloooooooooow.... the longer the mushie is wet the more potency it loses... damp rid usually takes about 48 hours to have the shroom close to bone dry.... if you get a big box fan and stick wire mesh on top of it and lay it down flat it will dry really great... takes about 12 hours for the shrooms to be pretty dry and in about 24 there bone dry.... THEN you should transfer to dessicant chamber if your planning on long term storage.... anyone who swears by dessicant try this method Once! ps... came back to edit... thought i would mentiong the fan doesnt need to be on high depending on the type of box fan Medium or Low will work fine... it doesnt have be be blowing very hard... just experiment... basic rule is make sure the shrooms wont blow away when there dry... this can be eliminated if you construct some type of cage but thats kinda overkill and lame when you can just turn down the fan speed

I just put 'em in the oven on some aluminum foil at 150F for about 2 hours (or until dry. Potency seems unaffected. Then store them in a baggie with dessicant. Quick and painless.

Ive been using window fan that blows upward for a few months now. Ive just recently started puting a bin of desecant beneath it to help dry the air that gets to the shrooms, but it still takes 3 days or more to dry the larger/meatier mushies and i dont like the idea of slicing them in half :[

I get a needle and thread and thread them all together. Then I hang the thread with all the mushrooms on it in front of a fan and leave it for 24 hours. After this, they're 80% dry, and then a few days in the dessicant chamber seems to finish them off completely. Then I just leave them in storage in the dessicant chamber until I'm ready to eat 'em.

Do you know this little bagies with silica gel that come along with hard disks or inside your computer case, i grab about 15 to 20 bags and put them at the bottom of a plastic tupperware, then i put the mushies on top of the baggies, the tupperware is then place under a light bulb, they dry on about 2 or 3 days. That really doesnt make alot of sense to me. Considering dessicant will absorb moisture from the air and be full up in a couple of days. Unless you are baking the little baggies to dry the dessicant out.

I normally just use a fan and slice up the stems a bit, but this never seems to get the little buggers 100% dry. Just purchased some of that flower-drying silica - thanks for the idea, Myceliumcake!

dear god... dont put them in the oven... they need to be dried with NO heat... You mean they need to be dried at Absolute Zero? Of course they need heat to dry. The question is how much is too much? Is your response based on personal experience or are you requoting other sources? In tea, mushrooms are subjected to temperatures from about 180F to 212F. Tea tripping is quite potent. Food dehydrators use temperatures from 90F to 150F with no problems. The oven at 150F for 2 or 3 hours (unitl dry) will NOT harm the shrooms. Put your hand in the oven, it is not really that warm. 150F is much cooler than my sauna.

Mmmm... shrooms at Absolute Zero... would those be called "Super Shrooms?" Ok, its a lame joke unless your a physics major. My friend was told that the reason she never had much success with desiccants is because she always put them in the fridge. Seems that desiccants need a bit of warmth to work properly. She hasn't tested the theory yet, but has no reason to doubt the validity of the source.

They have a light bulb above, so the baggies are drying meanwhile. Anyway, they just speed things up. It works for me. Peace, MAIA

Hack a nice hole in your computer case, 92mm in diameter. Then stick a 92mm fan in it and voila, not only do you have a nice blowhole to drop your temps, but also a way of drying your mushrooms in no time. My computer is always covered in mushrooms, some on the blowhole, some on top of my PCI card fan. Then after a day into the silica gel chamber

I think the paper towel works well with the dessicant. The dessicant drys the paper towel.

the problem with dessicant ive found is it dosnt dry long enough. I used freshly baked with the coloer changing crystals, after only 6 hours the bright blue ones had turned bright pink and needed to be dried again.

I see the usefulness of the desicant chamber, but the real question is, what about sealing them in ziplock bags, or better yet, using an impulse sealer that sucks the air out, and storing them this way?
