Well... It was excellent. I did it when I was 18 after a year of University. I got a 1 year working visa. Worked in Cafe's, warehouses etc. At the end of my trip I worked on a couple farms in the north rainforests. One was a personal organic garden that belonged to a woman on the egde of a 60+ member commune. The other was a friend of hers... It was a great experience... learned tonnes about myself mostly. Saw great things..had great Times. I love Australia I went back again last year to tour(musician). Am going back once again in Jan/Feb!!!

wow, in the rainforests!? that is absolutely amazing! where in australia was that? i would love to visit australia when i set out! were you just travelling all around and then came across the farms? how did you find/contact them?

was it difficult to get the work visa (also, are you from the US?)? and how restricting is the visa, for example do you HAVE to be working all the time or can you work and travel?

i plan on taking off to europe and beyond hopefully by summer, and have been trying to figure out if i should try and get a visa or such travel around with the passport. i heard it is difficult to get a visa.

sorry about all the questions, but i love stumbling across good info resources!

definitely interested in this and have been reading about farms all over the country from the initial link posted. will more than likely do this in the next few months with some local Appalachian mountain organic farms and then travel elsewhere in the summer and early fall months. I'm basically saving enough money now to travel and live a more peaceful nomadic lifestyle. if I can get free room/board and organic food for a while here and there and can travel, then I'm basically covered. I can work nights at local businesses when I'm running low on funds in order to get a train/bus ticket to the next place as well as some essentials like new clothes, shoes, and toiletries. knowledge, experience, traveleing, communication and relationships, etc. = key

thanks again for the original site.

no problem! your plan sounds really excellent! best of luck to you on it! are you planning on staying in the US or are you going international too?

i've got a few friends who have worked on WWOOF farms before and loved it...

I'm definitely planning on starting up a similar farm in southern india in about 5 years time, just to try it out - got maybe 20 friends from different places who are all up for it, so i think it'll be great...

This thread is awesome.

I live with my parents and they have given me a quarter acre land to grow them vegetables on sortof as my payment for board. Life could be so simple and stress free if everyone stopped their silly jobs they hate doing and stopped trying to make themselves better then other people through money and ego. Umm I see a rant coming so I'll just say

Learning how feed yourself is such a great thing and may become very important in say 5-10 years time.

I totally agree with you! i would love to hear your rant actually! i am on a personal mission to remove myself from job having (infact i havent had a traditional job in well over a year now!). my next step is to be able to be financially free from the system and be able to live how i want to! feeding myself, building for myself, and have a hell of a life (of course with my great friends!)

I'm definitely going international. I want to visit Europe for a while and am looking into some of the non-USA countries listed on the WWOOF site. I wish Sweden had a list, but I'm sure between the ~30 farms I'd find something I like. I've always wanted to visit the Scandinavian countries and most Western European countries as well as a few Eastern ones. I want to visit Asia and Australia (perhaps through this). a woman I work with now is moving to Australia in about a month. her family lived there before, and her daughter is going to school there. she said I could stay with them whenever I want. I have friends in Singapore and South Korea.

I plan to start volunteering locally with the Red Cross (had my interview today, went well) so I can within the next year or so move to Southeast Asia to help with the tsunami relief. I want to do that for a while and then go on elsewhere.

I basically want what you said you want. I don't want to be tied to a restrictive job. I don't mind working at all and have a really strong work ethic. it's just working retail or working for any faceless corporation driven only by profit doesn't appeal to me. I want something that will make me feel fulfilled and give something back to humanity or the world. I have never cared about having a lot of money and only wanted it because I "had" to have it for food and rent.

anyway, I want to visit a few parts of the USA like the Pac NW where I've never been and also revisit New England. I'd like to WWOOF there and then basically live internationally for a few years doing whatever I can.

there are lots of options, and I'm young and want to explore (myself and the world) more.

who wants to be a robot to work for the man and get nothing out of it...to grow your own food to take care of your own is the way lif should be...everyone one that has this mind set should start a commune somewhere so we can all take care of our selfs and our fellow brothers and sisters that feel the same way about life...WORKING for the man sucks and it gets us no where...let do it for our selves...and change the world mold on how people need to be

Ricochet, it sounds like you are in for an excellent couple of years. it is really awesome to have connections around the world to have something to fall back on or a place to go. awesome!

i really hope you two (and everyone actually) find happiness in what you are doing! who knows, maybe we will meet up some day! i think it is so important to set goals like these and work at them fully to achieve them. what else are we living for except to do what we want?! inspiring!

As ideal as it sounds working on a farm, and supporting you and your family, you still need a source of income. To survive only through agriculture, you need a serious operation going on, at a mass rate. You need to be able to move your stuff too. And that kind of life, involves lots of work, not necessarly hard, but the amount is high.

Now, until we can change the economy and society, thats sorta the grim reality. Less you cut yourself off completely, which isnt that easy these days.

Right now, my life consists of working farms. Seasonally, I work from april to december. I take winters off to do whatever I want; travel, party, school, whatever.

I would love to try and start up a small farm of my own, only drawback I see, is you need to be tied down to them. I am still young and don't want to have to be devoting my life at this stage to a homestead. I want it to be in the latter of my years. Im thinking Costa Rica, where I can grow fruit, veggies, and ganja. I'll have the ocean close by (a must), and my ship. If the going gets tough, I can just pull the anchor up and float away.

i understand what you mean. it will be hard work. the hopes for me is to first of all, not have a "family" meaning dependant children for a while (which believe me i want!). and also to have a mass of people (probably no more than twenty at first) that want similar things and will get a community going. we want to incorporate technology to make the work easier and bills less (like solar, wind, and thermal). i hope this all is possible! i really have to expand my knowledge of famring and such though. i have a ways to go!

No prob..on the Questions.

I was wwoofing in the Atherton Tablelands west of Cairns. I found out about wwoofing from a friend and sent away for the little wwoofing book. Im from Canada..Being in the commonweath helps to get a working Visa, but it shouldnt be hard for US citizens. The Visa is great, Like $120 ..work when you want where you want, move on, travel.. Whatever. Free Country!

I suggest you go hunt down WWOOF - they are easy to find and it was years ago that I did it...things change.

same with the Working Visa. Google search for Australian Immigration and Tourism Sites. You'll find it in 10 clicks or less I bet.
