Free Room & Board while working on an Organic Farm!
    #3893644 - 03/09/05 04:46 PM (19 years, 23 days ago)

If anyone is as stoked about learning self-sufficiency as much as i am. This seems like a really excellent experience! There are tons of places all over america that host volunteers to help them work on their farm, where the volunteers learn about raising crops and animals, how to make gardens, irrigation, compost...all that stuff, while they work. food and board are free.

It probalby is not for the weak hearted, it is a lot of work! 4-7 hours a day. but anyway, check it out if your interested!

Shit! That is awesome! did you find it educational? did you travel to australia or are you already living there? if you had to travel there, did you have to get a visa to work there?

Do you think it helped you? id love to hear more about your experience!

um...there have been some symptoms, but they seem to have lessoned. the list thus far are:

euphoria, eye muscle pain (sensativity to light), drowziness, slight visual distortions, memory impairment, um...i had a little more difficulty taking a deep breath yesterday for about an hour (could have been anxiety)...i cant really think of other things.

but i know that today i got all placebos. we'll see about tomorrow. and only 8 more blood drawls left until i get out of here! yeah!

Heres another interesting site. i recommend first reading the book "Ishmael" by Daniel Quinn, but this site is pretty excellent. it basically is a resource or database for people to find people that are attempting to become more sustainable.

Thats what im saying 4 - 7 hours seems weak for the farmer life. Any farmer i know gets up before sunrise and stops workin when its to dark to see.

Sounds good to me man but im going to keep my eye out for a farm job that pays.

I had some friends, let's call them Jane and Jim, who decided to network through WWOOF. They settled on an olive farm in Spain, they were excited to get there hands dirty and soak in some local culture. Well, the folks they stayed with were nice enough, but J & J never got to do any farm work, their hosts installed them as tutors and babysitters of their two young children. They definitely enjoyed the experience, but didn't ever get to learn anything related to olives or farming.  FYI - YMMV :peace:

definitely interested in this and have been reading about farms all over the country from the initial link posted. will more than likely do this in the next few months with some local Appalachian mountain organic farms and then travel elsewhere in the summer and early fall months. I'm basically saving enough money now to travel and live a more peaceful nomadic lifestyle. if I can get free room/board and organic food for a while here and there and can travel, then I'm basically covered. I can work nights at local businesses when I'm running low on funds in order to get a train/bus ticket to the next place as well as some essentials like new clothes, shoes, and toiletries. knowledge, experience, traveleing, communication and relationships, etc. = key

thanks again for the original site.

Yeah, I've been interested in this for a bit. I've already got my book. I haven't contacted a farm yet, but I plan to do this.

Well... It was excellent. I did it when I was 18 after a year of University. I got a 1 year working visa. Worked in Cafe's, warehouses etc. At the end of my trip I worked on a couple farms in the north rainforests. One was a personal organic garden that belonged to a woman on the egde of a 60+ member commune. The other was a friend of hers... It was a great experience... learned tonnes about myself mostly. Saw great things..had great Times. I love Australia I went back again last year to tour(musician). Am going back once again in Jan/Feb!!!

Woofing is a great way to help you stay afloat when travelling. Farms somtimes have side business's that are willing to pay you for fullfill that extra role. But yea, up here, they expect you to volunteer like 5 -7 hours a day.

But like what Sheik says, there are also a lot of farms with paid postions, doing almost the extact same thing, and chances are you'll learn a bit more too.

But yea, http://www.wwoof.org/, Great way to experience some local land while travelling.

Wow, this is an awesome thing.

I've never heard of this organization before, but it sounds sweet.

I'd love to work in France for a bunch of months after I graduate....
