just a piece of advice. I tried blowing for awhile, and it didn't turn out to well. However, I know a few pipe makers in my area. Anyway, my best advice to you on a good pipe is you want to be able to hold the pipe in your mouth and be able to see the top of the bowel. So you can see what your smoking and lighting, yah know.

Keep up the work, brother. Are you teaching yourself, or do you have more expierencend friends around.

well for beads you can hook up for cheap working on soft glass. you can actually use a minni cmping stove propane tank and one of those torches you can buy at ace hardware. its a totally different type of glass work thoug and you will nener be able to make pipes

http://www.artglass1.com/lg.htm

this site will show you the difference but i recomend to you not to buy a kit

You can get a good amount of stuff for lets say 500, You dont need a large torch and you can use premixed gas. You would need mandrels wich are five bucks per 10 thats what you make the beads on, a torch lets say 100, bead seperater 10 bucks a bottle, graphite marver 10 bucks, some clear glass rods
depends on thickness for cost, a color sample pack 70 bucks thats every color glass alchemy makes. rhodium glasses 30 bucks, anealer wich is a couple houndred, or you can use a fiberglass woven blanket to cool them in or a crock pot full of vermiculite. This is all for using pyrex plass, i dont know much about soft glass.

Hmmmm doesnt sound too bad gentlemen, thanks for the info. I know I wouldnt be able to pipes with a small bead setup, but there are plenty of great pipe makers out there already  I think beads would be good enough for me.

Hell yeah, thats what Im talkin about. I would like to learn to blow glass though, not for pipes, but big ass dale chihuly style orbs and other organic forms. I met him once when I worked at this big student art program/job in 1999. He was crazy!

Learning to make beads will give you a good feel for working with glass and combining colors and patterns to make neat stuff. Then when you want to move up to pipes you will have your techniques and styles more developed and not waste so much color glass and gas trying to figure out what you like. And you can sell you beads to bead shops and other more open and reputable places. Bead makers won't get busted by dick cops! :-)

up at the local art museum here someone commisioned chihuly to make this incredible chandelier. i started out workin with boro so i could be wrong but it seems like mandarel beadwork would be a whole different world, i made a few morretti beads for a necklace once, but other then that i use boro for beads and pendants, i dono why i could never stand mandarels, less of a feel. but then again i probly woulda had some better things to show for it early on if i started with soft glass, teaching myself with boro and a tiny ass home depot torch was a wreck. cant help laughing when i look back at some of my early work esp since that little piece of shit couldent melt anthing bigger then like 20mm standard, had a good time tho.

(or if some stupid reason those links dont work - http://www.glassmovement.com/galleries

your doing pretty good, i'm impressed for how well your doing so early. Especialy with those red and whites, those stupid colors burn all easy, but if you can get them to work, they are some of the most bad ass.. red-orange-yellow, together they are freakin sweet. (example http://www.glassmovement.com/galleries/streamimage.php?path=L1BpcGVzL3BpcGUwMTJfMDQuanBn )

oh, and get some amber purple, and double amber purple, and silver strike... those colors rock. ... man, your inspiring me to go fire up the torch 70 miles away... i have a 5 day weekend coming up, i might have to head out there... it'll be the jam.
