The Pineal Gland
    #3789481 - 02/16/05 01:51 PM (19 years, 1 month ago)

I'm doing a research project for my biology class on the pineal gland, and more specifically on endogenous production of DMT and its function in the brain. I already know I'm probably going to be using DMT: The Spirit Molecule as my main source, but are there any other good sources you'd recommend?

The pineal gland produces all tryptamine neurotansmitters in the brain.

Pineal gland chemical list :
DMT
5-MeO-DMT
NMT
5-MeO-NMT
Psilocin (4-PHP-DMT)
Serotonin (5-HT)
Melatonin
Beta-carbolines

Freaky, isn't it? There is no way we can find psilocin in the blood stream or urine as it oxidizes so quickly.

I'd really like to know where you heard that. Strassman doesn't mention anything about the pineal gland producing psilocin.

look into Dr. JC Callaway of the University of Kuopio, Finland. He's done a lot of fascinating research on dmt and the pineal gland.

I would check out the isi web of knowledge, pubmed, or another academic resource. Your school probably subcribes to one and you might have to access it through the school computers but you can search through academic papers and find an incredible amount of scientific information on any topic this way. It is far better than looking for books or other articles because books are not held to the same standards as scientific papers...Not to mention that these resources have an unbelievable amount of info on almost any topic.

From Erowid:

Quote:

When considering adrenochrome, it's helpful to remember that "adrenochrome" refers to two distinct things: 1) a metabolite of endogenous epinephrine occurring spontaneously in the body, 2) a byproduct of metabolized pharmaceutical epinephrine. Endogenous adrenochrome has been widely researched for its possible role in schizophrenia. It is described as a hallucinogen or psychotomimetic and a cholinesterase inhibitor. Cholinesterase is one of many important enzymes needed for the proper functioning of the nervous system.

Interest in adrenochrome as a deliberately administered psychoactive is largely a persisting myth popularized by Hunter S. Thompson's writing. The oral ingestion of a vial by the main character of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is not substantiated by published research or reports, which usually refer to the endogenous metabolite.

A derivative of adrenochrome, adrenochrome monosemicarbazone (or carbazochrome salicylate) is marketed in some countries for the prevention of certain types of bleeding, both IM and in tablets.

Does the part It is described as a hallucinogen or psychotomimetic and a cholinesterase inhibitor mean that it is described as a hallucinogen or that it is a hallucinogen inhibitor?

> Does [this] mean that it is described as a hallucinogen or that it is a hallucinogen inhibitor?

Donno.

A psychotomimetic drug is one that alters consciousness, such as mescaline or DMT... hallucinogen and psychotomimetic are fairly synonomous.

Cholinesterase inhibitors are a class of drug that inhibit the action of the cholinesterase enzyme, which is needed for the proper functioning of the nervous system. For example, organophosphate pesticides are cholinesterase inhibitors.

I would guess they mean "It is described as a hallucinogen or psychotomimetic and also as a cholinesterase inhibitor."

Then it would appear adrenochrome is a hallucinogen.
