There are others to pick up the torch and keep it shining bright...none to the same extent as the Dead, but still.....the movement is not dying, be assured of that.  :hippie:

No one can replace the Dead! If they go, I will miss them alot :frown:

Since it is their 40th they have to do something to celebrate. Even if it was just one big last show, and then they retired after this year. 40 years is a loooong time for a band to keep rocking! Those other jam bands are good, and they carry the spirit, but none can replace the Dead and their Family. :gd_icon:

the dead should convince the Stones to quit... that way the Dead can be the longest running act.

The dead will never cease exist in our reality. All that we hear about the band is based on heresay. We dont know how the band feals about eachother. We dont know anything, except for what we read in message boards, or here people talk about.

The grateful dead is not a band, it is something much bigger than that, and it is bigger today then ever....

I am sure there will be a tour this summer, there will be something i am sure.

I think the core members are trying to figure out who they want in the band as warren haynes supposedly did not sign, wich is ok he has his own projects he wants to tackle.

So yall relax its not even spring yet!

I wouldn't wanna hear Warren try to fill Jerry's shoes. Much respect, but none of his stuff (amazing as it is) catches my ear.

You guys have me curious about Jimmy Herring. If I went to see the dead, I'd definitely wanna hear a Jerry disciple on guitar. Does Jimmy sound a lot like him?

heres the rap on jimmy herring...

jimmy was a jazz guitarist before he was selected to be part of a project called jazz is dead. Basicly it was a jazz jam band that played covers of dead songs, with musical intruments carying the vocal lines and such. This required jimmy to learn the songs.. He played in jazz is dead and eventually he got picked by phil to take the spot of lead guitar in the dead. Jimmy was not a dead fan at all untill he was put in jazz is dead this was just before the dead went back on tour.

Ive seen jimmy play twice live, he is an awsome guitarist. He is quoted as saying that he is a more technical guitarist so it took time for him to get used to playing dead music. He would often hear a line jerry would play and he would want to replicate it but he has learned thats its better to make something new with his own abilities.

Jimmy Herring is a pretty technical player. I have never seen Jazz is Dead, but I have an album of their's. It is really good stuff, but I like to hear him actually play with the Dead as opposed to covering their songs. Awesome guitar player that is the closest to sounding like Jerry that I have heard, yet!!

John Kadlecik of DSO should join up with the Dead. This guy sounds almost exactly like Jerry(voice wise) He is awesome guitar wise as well.

I think Jimmy did a great job with the band, he didn't try to play like Jerry but you could tell he studied jerry's sound quite a bit.

love this quote:

Although Garcia is gone from Weir's life physically, his presence remains.

"I can hear him when I play," he says. "When you spend that much time playing with somebody, in your heart and in your head, it just doesn't go away."

I'll gladly hook up anyone with some Phil Lesh adn Friends shows with jimmy ripping it up on guitar or even a dead show from 2003 with jimmy on guitar. Maybe I'll set up a bit torrent this weekend if enough are interested.

Black Muddy River

When the last rose of summer pricks my finger,
And the hot sun chills me to the bone,
When I can't hear the song for the singer,
And I can't tell my pillow from a stone,
I will walk alone by the black muddy river,
And sing me a song of my own,
I will walk alone by the black muddy river,
And sing me a song of my own.

When the last bolt of sunshine hits the mountain,
And the stars start to splatter in the sky,
When the moon hits the southwest horizon,
With the scream of an eagle on the fly,
I will walk alone by the black muddy river,
And listen to the ripples as they moan,
I will walk alone by the black muddy river,
And sing me a song of my own.

Black muddy river, roll on forever,
I don't care how deep or wide, if you've got another side,
Roll muddy river, roll muddy river, black muddy river, roll.

When it seems like the night will last forever,
And there's nothing left to do but count the years,
When the strings of my heart begin to sever,
And stones fall from my eyes instead of tears,
I will walk alone, by the black muddy river,
And dream me a dream of my otd,
I will walk alone, by the black muddy river,
And sing me a song of my own, sing me a song of my own.
