this is a good writeup about quantum computers. i'd post it all here, but there are pics that help a lot.

Very interesting article.

One problem i see as a layman to this field is the interface between the quantum "processor" and the information input source. How would information be transmitted to the quantum processor to make it useful for an application? Sure you can send an information "packet" in the form of photons but those photons have to come from somewhere. Any physicists out there that can give an answer or reference for this topic? I mean, i would assume that this would then be the limiting factor of quantum computation, essentially making it just as slow as current circuit technology.

Well, i have read a good bit about this, and then had a good bit explained by a quantum physicist. he started by telling me that regular computers are like tossing coins, head or tails, 1 or 0, but ridiculously fast. A quantum computer would be like an 8 sided dice that you tossed, but incredibly fast, depending on the amount of photons or quanta making up the system, according to Schrodingers cat theory, there could then be a 1,0 , or a 1 and 0. the idea behind this is exponentially faster computing. The photons themselves dont have any data on them necessarily, but their waveform functions and probability could be used to power computations. The problem doesnt lie in how data can be transfered, it lies in problems with coherence, or the molestation of the particles by outside forces. Also, a photon is just quantum light particles, and they have machines now that can send one photon of light at a time.
If you want something to better explain quantum nature, do a search for "the young slit experiment" which can better explain how a photon can have two locations and two paths at the same time.
