Banisteriopsis seedlings turning brown! Need advice!!!
    #3677288 - 01/25/05 12:50 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Hello everybody,
I've got 4 Banisteriopsis caapi seedlings, but they don't look so healthy. I allready lost 1, and another one's leaves are turning brown too. They looked very healthy and vibrant green in the first week, but the second week (which is now) the leaves of the oldest seedling started hanging and got brown spots on them. Those spots grew and finally took over the whole seedling. This proces is now repeating itself on a second seedling.
They are grown in a 50/50 pine bark-soil mixture with a little loam added. They get 18 hours of TL-light (not too strong) and temps are around 30?C (= 86?F I think) which drop around 7 degrees at night.
What am I doing wrong? I really hope somebody can figure this out, I would hate to loose another seedling or maybe all of them.
I'm sorry, but I haven't got a digicam, so no pics.
All ideas and thoughts are welcome.
Thanx in advance

pine bark and soil? may be good for germination but i wouldn't keep the seedlings there, sounds a bit unnatural.
i was to say you might be watering too much, perhaps the wood chips are holding too much water...

Pine bark based potting mixes can become gluggy due to the bark decomposing. This is accelerated by excess water and high alkalinity. Adding some coarse sand to the potting is a good way to increase drainage, but means you will have to water more often. Keep in mind drying out is not an option for tropicals, so to prevent early decomposition with these it is a good idea to put some pebbles of expandaded clay balls in the bottom of your pot so that no soil touches the bottom. Use a larger pot if the pebbles reduce your soil volume too much.

Pine bark produces acidic compounds as it decomposes. Pine based potting mixes can easily get to pH 4.5 over a few months if nothing is added. At such low pH the decomposition slows dramatically, but the nutrients also become unavailable. Unfortunately, such soil is only suitable for some Aussie natives. Adding lime will raise the pH, but will also speed up decomposition.

The long and short of it is, either use a better mix or increase drainage.

Thanks a lot for the advice, guys! I'll replant them in a normal potting soil. I thought the 50/50 pinebark-soil mixture was often used for caapi. I read about it on Ayahuasca.com where a guy (I think Ringworm) uses this soil to grow his plants with great results. it's indeed possible that I also watered them too much...
Let's hope they survive...

You would trust a guy who calls himself Ringworm? Heh.

He deals with shit so it makes sense he knows shit

But yeah, let the surface dry out in between or maybe just water every second day or something.

Actually, Ringworm has been growing banisteriopsis commercially for many years. I'd say he's an authority figure when it comes to growing Ayahuasca plants outside the Amazon.

ringworm is indeed an authority in the growing subject, he sure knows what he does but sometimes adaptations are needed, there are different climates (or do you live close to ringworm, funkey?), what works for one doesn't necessarily applies to everyone else...

I was making a joke.

Sorry if I discredited Ringworm in any way.

I repotted the seedlings and they seem to do better, although it's way to early to know for sure. I think overwattering and suffocation of the roots was the biggest problem. I'll let you know when they're doing fine next week.
