i am getting two types of cactus seeds (san pedro, and the puruvian one) and i dont know how to grow cacti from seeds, only from cuttings. how do you do it?
if one drinks too much from a bottle marked pioson, it is most certain to dissaprove one sooner or later.

i can help you buy some very small clay pots, 2in diameter max. buy also some cactus soil and some fine sand fill the pots at 2/3 and add a layer of sand. then put the pots in the oven at high for at least 30-40 minutes. this helps to sterilize the soil. prepare a solution of water and bleach (10%), and put the seeds in, let it stand 5 minutes to sterilize the outer coat. then dry the seeds with clean paper towel. spread the seeds in the pot, and water it from the bottom submerging into clean water (sterile). you can add a thin layer of sand to cover the seeds, but isn't necessary. You should never water the pots from the top, always from the bottom. final step: put the pots in plastic bags ( i use sandwich size ziplock bags, enough for 2 pots), seal the bag and put in a warm place with lots of light, but no under strong direct sunlight (a couple hours don't harm btw) Depending from the race between 1-6 weeks germination start. For trichocereus species in 2-3 weeks germination starts (depending of course of the climate)

yes, but you must water them, the soil/sand must be always moist for the first 3-6 months, depending from the specie, that's why u sterilize everything. between 100 and 500 seeds, if you have lot of growth after a while you can trasplant the most healtier specimens. you can put the bags with the pots everywhere is warm and with light. because the seed isn't anymore seed but a small green ball.

buy also some cactus soil and some fine sand For trichocereus, I would use a mixture of standard compost and perlite. Cactus soils are very heavy soils, and trichocereus like a quite airy, light soil. fill the pots at 2/3 and add a layer of sand. then put the pots in the oven at high for at least 30-40 minutes. this helps to sterilize the soil. prepare a solution of water and bleach (10%), and put the seeds in, let it stand 5 minutes to sterilize the outer coat. then dry the seeds with clean paper towel. Club, does this make a difference in your opinion? I've never done either of these before, and have not really had any problems, but I've got a load of seeds to plant soon and may do this if it may help. I'm a bit dubious about putting the seeds in bleach though, perhaps dilute hydrogen peroxide would be better?

Phyl, sowing the seeds can be done or not, depending on various factors: if the seed is fresh and fast germinating you can plant directly, but is advisable to do as a rule... for example aztekium ritteri seeds are very small and need a couple of months to germinate. If you jump the sterilization step you'll get molds and algaes in your pot instead cactis a solution of peroxide can help, but bleach is much better....
