Debian: is changing permissions to use firefox acceptable?

i installed firefox with the standard "apt-get install mozilla-firefox" command.
I was not able to run firefox with any user accounts, only root.
I changed the permissions to "read write & exec" for "user group & others" and it works just fine.

Is this alright?
Should I have done something else?

Which release of debian (/etc/debian_version) are you running? And did you check the BTS?

Did you try reconfiguring firefox? Might be a profiles thing... I don't see anything in the BTS about it, either.
