I got one tall skinny fruit, and all the rest seem to be going this way. The one on the far left has its gills sticking up through the cap. Whyyyyyy?
No peroxide or petroleum jelly was involved:)

AAAAAAAAAh , CDC. Those must be the WEIRDEST looking cubes i have EVER seen. Altho, i am not suprised it comes from a fellow donkey like you .... I guess you can blame it on a genetic mutation. I doubt that you have any "environmental" or even substrate problems that this can be traced back to. It's great that you got a pic of those "beauties". Just goes to show you how this strain of mushroom (and i'm talking about ALL mushrooms kiddies) can "morph" and change.

Maybe that's because they're P. mexicana:D I believe BIO, or was it Anno (something ending in O anyway) had the same prob, but I don't remember what the cause was.

It's still easy to get a good harvest of sclerotia from them though, although from my "experiments" they seem to be weaker than cubes.......:(

Actually it was me who had the mutated mexicana fruits, of the four sclerotia producing strains I isolated from the mexicanas, I got four fruits off of one culture that looked just like those. I did however get shitloads of Sclerotia from my isolated strains. I posted a picture of them some where on this site. I think it was in a reply to BIO who also got some strange fruits too. They took a lot of time to fruit, and all came up funky like that. The sclerotia yield was exceptional. The tampanensis sclerotia are more potent then the mexicanas.

they have cancer :) thats tumourous action you see there. notice the stripe of cap cells allong the stipe, cancerous bodies tend to grow uncontrolled and form tissues from other parts of the organism. like for example a human leg tumor could contain teeth, hair and stomache cells. its just a theory. ya never know.

EAT ME
Mmmmmm.
When cut open this beauty gave off a very strong mexicana smell, almost like bleach or sulphur dioxide. Can't wait to eat it....

Not so sure about that WM, they may not be pretty, but they are pinning quite heavily now, unlike the other isolate I have, which is quite a heavy sclerotium producer, but has produced NO fruits at all. No chance of getting any sporeprints though, I would imagine.:D

Well, ok then. Maybe its just environmental. As long as you're happy with the little freaks. I don't forsee spore prints from those either ;)
Keep in mind this strain is recently collected from the wild, it probably needs some domestication.

And from above.....
Not the most aesthetically pleasing crop, but it looks like it should weigh in quite nicely, the mutant blobs are pretty dense. Note the occaisional normal-ish looking fruit. Cloning time I think.

:) Those are pretty ugly, but a nice flush anyways, so are they really dense, like a cross between fruits and sclerotia? If so, might be a strain worth saving if you don't mind looking at them, I think it's neet. :)

I picked 20g of the most hideous specimens, we'll see what the dry weight is. But yes, they are really......horny:)

I think the deformities were caused by lack of air exchange. Since I have moved the box into a large well ventilated terrarium, rather than using it as a closed system with regular fanning, the fruits produced have been much taller and thinner and typically shroom-like:) I've picked the first flush, and hopefully the second one will be normal looking.
